would you buy 3/8" thick flanges?... will start selling flanges soon.
i may get back in the flange business. it would be far more cost effective to make all flanges from 3/8" thick mild steel rather than 1/2". they would be laser cut. just curious if i could offer them at a reasonable price would people still buy them?

Re: would you buy 3/8" thick flanges?... if so, may start selling flanges again.
I would buy quite a few to make manis etc with :y

Re: would you buy 3/8" thick flanges?... if so, may start selling flanges again.
i just bought a 3/8th mild flange for my car

Re: would you buy 3/8" thick flanges?... if so, may start selling flanges again.
Honestly, head flanges no. Everything else yes. The prices would have to be good to warrant a drop from a 1/2 cnc'd piece to a 3/8 flame cut.

Re: would you buy 3/8" thick flanges?... if so, may start selling flanges again.
is a 3/8th mild flange not thick enough? i'm using that and sched 10 t's and 90's to make a log...

Re: would you buy 3/8" thick flanges?... if so, may start selling flanges again.
I only use BMC flanges now. They are perfect. No scale to grind off, weld beautiful, and are finished on all sides. Flame cut usually have one side that is less desirable than the other.

Re: would you buy 3/8" thick flanges?... if so, may start selling flanges again.
3/8 warps easier. i think the reason you got a good rep here was because you sold nice quality 1/2 flanges. welll worth the $$ if you ask me. if you make 3/8 flame cut flanges your no different than most of the vendors here.

Re: would you buy 3/8" thick flanges?... if so, may start selling flanges again.
Aaron, I would be interested in turbo flanges, DP flanges, and WG flanges. Are buying a plasma table?

1/2" or go home
laser cut looks like ass after you buy nicely finished bmc flanges |

Same here. BMC CNC flanges are nice. |

cant go wrong with BMC as long as you have 4 weeks to wait for an order.

Looks like HMT has gone high roller.

Even the premium flanges are only $50 and regular only $30. |

Re: would you buy 3/8" thick flanges?... if so, may start selling flanges again.
they would be laser cut, not plasma. no, i'm not buying a machine for it, i'm trying to source them locally if i can get a reasonable price.
cnc machined flanges are nice i agree with everyone on that one. after speaking with my prospective supplier regarding mass production, it just isn't cost effective to machine them when they can be laser cut in a fraction of the time. there would be NO scale anywhere and NO rust anywhere on these flanges as the people i'm dealing with only use quality materials otherwise there is the possibility for imperfections and ------- up the laser with impurities in the material. the option for stainless is also there too but they would be spendy as the material is 4-5 times the price and they need to use a special gas for cutting ss. this is just a possibility until i am able to get my own cnc... of course, then they would be all cnc machined. thanks for the feedback guys i do appreciate it. |
Re: would you buy 3/8" thick flanges?... if so, may start selling flanges again.
It depends on the type of laser but just for clarity this is the type of cut quality you would get:
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...2/DSC03683.jpg Also the price would probably drop more than half as compared to a milled piece since one would be cut at around 6 IPM and a laser could probably do that same at 100ipm. I think the issue here is the thickness and not the cut quality |
Re: would you buy 3/8" thick flanges?... if so, may start selling flanges again.
cut speed is probably closer to 60ipm for 3/8" ms and 40ipm for 1/2". in the long term, that extra cut time adds up (30% more!), material cost would not be significant. it is also very difficult and more costly to laser cut holes that have a diameter smaller than the thickness of the material and retain acceptable quality- they have to be pulse cut which slows things down significantly. this is the main reason for sticking with 3/8" for everything since cutting from 1/2" would probably double the price on cut time.

I think the issue here is the thickness and not the cut quality Cut quality IS the issue. That piece you posted is thin and most cutting shops have lasers that make clean cuts through thin stuff, just like plasma cutters. The issue is that you need to find a place that has a high powered laser that is meant for greater than 1" clean cutting, so that way the 3/8 stuff comes out clean. The same is true for plasma cutting. |
Re: would you buy 3/8" thick flanges?... if so, may start selling flanges again.
whatever cut my flange, the cut quality is garbage and you can see where the plasma/flame wondered through the steel. it's all wavy and shitty with tons of mill scale, but it doesn't bother me because it was 15 bucks :P

This thread makes it sound like your getting flame cut slag filled flanges. the point I was making is you can get a clean cut with a laser. thats why I say quality isn't the issue because I'm sure he did the research and isn't going to send people shitty flanges. He wants to know if people would want 3/8" thick flanges, not if a laser can do it. |

No doubt laser can do a good job, I just wanted to point out that most places don't invest enough to go over the rated cut. But your right. This thread has veered off course. |
Re: would you buy 3/8" thick flanges?... if so, may start selling flanges again.
look for a sticky in the fs forum in the next couple weeks, i'm about to order my first batch. 3/8" mild steel, laser cut flanges will be up for sale with cheaper prices than anywhere else you will find. start making suggestions for what patterns you want to see. so far they will include:
Honda: B-series D-series K-series F22A F22B F20C B20A5 A20A C32A H22A Toyota: 4AGE 3SGTE Scion TC Turbo related (all inlet flanges and wastegate flanges will have threaded holes): T3 T4 T4 twin scroll GT25/GT28 T3 5 bolt downpipe 38mm WG these are just to start. as demand grows for more patterns, they will be added. |

I would def. buy any flanges Aaron sells. We've all seen the quality of his work which goes to show how meticulous he is, so I honestly doubt he'd sell sub-par flanges just to make a few bucks.
Here's one for you, I don't see too many of these floating around and would kinda cater to some of us n/a guys as well looking to do collector upgrades and help with turbo dp's... 2.5" and 3" collector flanges, like the standard honda 2-bolt piece where you can slide your 2.5" or 3" piping through the flange, weld it on, and then use those lead donut gaskets to seal to the rest of the exhaust. |
Re: would you buy 3/8" thick flanges?... will start selling flanges soon.
How about Toyota "E" series engines and that goofy chrysler turbo flange?
|
Re: would you buy 3/8" thick flanges?... will start selling flanges soon.
Just seeing if this went anywhere? Might be in need of a 4age head flange.
Thanks Randy |
Re: would you buy 3/8" thick flanges?... will start selling flanges soon.
waterjet for the win.
|
Re: would you buy 3/8" thick flanges?... will start selling flanges soon.
id be in for a 4ag flange. if they come out real soon.
|
Re: would you buy 3/8" thick flanges?... will start selling flanges soon.
I make all my flanges out of 3/8", some even thinner, never had a problem with them warping.
