wireless routers

My current linksys router licks balls, Drops the signal like every 10 minutes and i have to go down stairs to reset the damn thing. I'm looking for a new one that will give me good signal in my room. House is like a 3000sqft home and i need it to get from one end of the house down stairs to my room upstairs. What kind of wireless router are you using and how much did you pay, and obviously how good does it work. Money really isn't an option but if its going to cost an arm and a ------- leg don't even mention it :7

Re: wireless routers

my netgear works perfectly. was worth the 20 bucks from comp usa. plus my old linksys did the same ---- yours does. i dont know what the problem is with most routers where you have to reset that ---- every fucken day.

Re: wireless routers

Attach a directional antenna to your router and point it to your computer. It should amp the signal to make a difference.

And if anybody doesn't know yet, Fon (www.fon.com) is selling Linksys WRT54G wireless routers for $13 shipped.

Re: wireless routers

Wireless routers are the most unreliable pieces of ----...id say they around a year

for my clients and myself, i only use llinksys. altho ive had the same experiences that you have had with them, they seem to do it less often than other brands. they may be more expensive but i think they are worth it

what ever you do, dont buiy a dlink

Re: wireless routers

Linsys WRT54GC and get a booster antenna for it.

BoosTedZSix 07-14-2006 11:54 AM

Re: wireless routers

yeah i've seen some routers that come with the booster thing. does that ---- really work or is it a gimmick to get you to buy their ----. It works fine at first. then i have to reset every 10 mins sometimes and that gets ------- annoying :-\. The router i bought was on sale, maybe there was a reason for it :-X and i'm not to familiar with wireless crap but i dont think i can use a wireless g router with my wireless b cards correct?

88crxSi 07-14-2006 12:10 PM

Re: wireless routers

nah they actually work.

if you could find a WRT54GL (Linux Version) you can flash the BIOS w/ a modified version and can even increase the signal strength.

WRT54GC
http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satel...VisitorWrapper

Booster Antenna (try w/o first, if it still sux try it then).
http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satel...VisitorWrapper

any SMA antenna should work w/ it.

Re: wireless routers

but would i have to get a 802.11b/g router so it works with my cards or will a wireless g router work with my wireless b cards? How often do you reset yours if you even have to?

Re: wireless routers

cat6e on a gigabit network is to fast for ata hardrives :) and some s-ata drives.

Re: wireless routers

My shitty netgear wireless router sucks as well, too lazy to go buy another one though. I just have a 100ft ethernet cable at my parents house, works great! :D

J-SMITH69 07-14-2006 02:36 PM

Re: wireless routers

as if you'd notice a difference in your house between cat5 and cat6 cable LOL

cat6 just costs more

Donald125 07-14-2006 02:41 PM

Re: wireless routers

I am sharing cable connection with my friend at the front house, running almost 50 ft of cat5 cable, feed throught the window then zip tie it alone the phone line hanging by the roof. just run some cable and save the $.

BoosTedZSix 07-14-2006 04:41 PM

Re: wireless routers

lol, we have like 3 computers and would need like 150+ ft of cat5, it'll probably end up coming out to the same price. Although the connection will be better. I just plug up the wireless router and be good to go. no labor involved :6

Re: wireless routers

if your reseting your router every ten min let me guess you downloading ---- off limewire or kazza or a torrent. my router wont let me do any of that for some reason and will trip out and i will have to reset it. but sence i cant really download anything with it tripping all the time i dont and it will last weeks usually before i will reset it. i use to have a action-tech router or something now i have this 2wire router. sometimes i get pissed off and blame the router for problems that occur but for the most part everything works fine besides it not letting me illigally download files which makes me angry :7

I don't like Linksys routers much. I manage a doc offices network and the damn linksys will just lose its configuration every couple of weeks. I even tried a new one with a different firmware version - same problem.

Jorsher 07-15-2006 02:21 AM

Re: wireless routers

I've used the same wr54g linksys on like 3 different networks and never had a problem with them :l

We got one of the extenders and it really helped in the big house.

Re: wireless routers

Linksys FTL in my experience. I've dealt with 2 of them and they were both a pita. cat5 for me.

i just built my comp yesterday and i use the router and card above. so far i get a good fast connection 95% of the time.
my computer is upstairs and my access point(router) is down stairs and it still works fine.

kain 07-18-2006 07:45 AM

Re: wireless routers

just use a adhoc network. easy peasy. or just get an access point if you wanna go wireless.
