k i need jd or buk to chime in, bitches i need some help, im getting a shitty signal from someone arond here with this crappy intel 3495 internal card, in my e1705, whats the easyest and cheapest way to get a good signal or more signals?? would a wireless acess point work? or do they need to be plugged in to a router or some ----??

If there is somewhere on the card to hook up an external, more powerful antenna that will help. Not much else you can do really, they are too far away.

There are a lot of cheap USB wireless adapters that you can use with an old DTV dish, or even a spider (asian strainer/scoop). That will help if you can find the network, the antenna will be directional.

yea i cant use that though, my e1705 dell only has an express socket, how does a wireless acess point work?? r they wireless and just have way more range? or does it need to be plugged into the router?? i found a seano usb one but how much better are they? only a 2dbi antenna?

They are routers that use radio waves instead of cat5 cable, more or less.

Don't expect to get on any that haven't been left wide open for you... which is about 60% wide open, not too shabby.

You need a wireless card (PCI for desktop, PCMCIA for laptop) with external antenna provision, or one of the USB wireless dildoes (the two I've had work pretty well). Google building Cantennas (or see how they use old dishes for reflectors for the USB stuffs) and build one out of an old coffee can and $10 in supplies and aim it at your neighbor. You'll get a good signal, and if you play a bit you can probably pick up another neighbor.

It can be pretty fun, but the first little bit of playing around can be frustrating. Since you've HMT'd a car before you probably won't even be irritated.

The antenna shown is my setup that you can hook into your mini-pci in your laptop if I read right or at least think I did. Its pretty early for me and im half asleep. Pm me if you wanna purchase it.

I couldn't find any technical specs of this wifi card, except some supported bluetooth. Lot of spam hits, I gave up, but I only searched for "FAQ" and not antenna or hacks.

Holy ----, I have that in PCMCIA flavor for my wardriving kit, cost me $65 shipped. If the USB is like the PCMCIA version, you can tweak those to 250mW. You won't need an external antenna to hit your neighbor's with that... I figure your stocker is the generic 30-40mW broadcast power whereas a 200 mW unit will have a couple times the range.

im not sure, at rokland.com i ordered the oronico wardriving pcmcia card with antenna but i canceled the order because i was reading my e1705 doesnt have the right slot, the express card slot looks about the same, but the guy at rokland told me in the back they hook up different, and currently nothing is really out, he said dell does make a wifi card for the express slot but its not really well, i have a intel 3945agb, whats the mw on that? i hope really low so i can buy the usb one and have it work wonders lol, hey jd hit up the guy from that shop on aim his aims rokhelper, its only like 57 shipped or some ---- i duno but that was the link, plus theyve tested all their products hes a real kool guy. in MI too.also that mini pci slot is what i have now, its on the back bottom of the laptop, it just plugs in like the ram does on the dells.

too bad i cant ------ate that because i have no way of connecting it to anything, dell laptops have a antenna in the screen for wifi, i found a few things on my intel card, but nothing that said how much power and range.

Expresscard is not mini PCI, it's its own thing. Just google or wiki "expresscard" and you'll find out all about it. They started putting it in almost all laptops made at the beginning of this year as the new standard as opposed to the older PCMCIA. Basically it's smaller, faster, and uses less power.

Stock wireless cards for laptops are puny, emasculated things. Your stocker pushes zero power - welcome to Centrino, bitch!

I may be mistaken, but the 200mW cards are technically against FCC regulation for consumer use, too much power. They get sold by small vendors without problem, but Linksys had to remove a high power product last year because it was targeted at the consumer.

I actually found one benefit of keeping the stock dell internal wireless card in my laptop instead of upgrading to the Intel one, the dell is compatible with OS X and intel isn't :) You'd think it would be the other way around.

Yup.

There's even a USB flavor with external antenna provision for sale on ebay currently, I think there's a half day left on it. It's probably overkill, I doubt you're going to turn into an antenna freak, the normal one you've already found will be several times stronger than what you're working with now.

Antennas are effective use of power, but there isn't actually any more power being pushed between the two models. Antennas are also big factors on how well you recieve. Prepare to pay $40-70 for a good antenna plus $15 for a pigtail adapter to mate it to your card. If you e-stalk the Quality antenna manufacturers, sometimes they sell their stuff on eBay if it's scratched for a good bit off normal sale price.

k thanks for the link jd, so basically i can use any antenna for this purpose, just need the pig tail to addapt the two ends? so this means i can have a long cable connecting the antenna to the usb device?

I swear I didn't steal it but I got one of those range extenders from walmart, the linksys ones. Worked great, we got full signal in our house from a router in another house.

Some antennas come with a length of low-loss cable, some don't. The adapter pigtails range from a few inches to a foot or two, IIRC. If the antenna doesn't come with a cable you're going to want to buy one because the pigtail by itself won't cut it.
