windows media player problems

ok so i spent the last 36 hours (------- long time) dling the new pirates of the caribean movie from limewire and its an .avi file. now when i go to play it it tells me "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

it gives me the options to close or to click on web help. when i click on web help it brings up a bunch of ---- i dont understand.

"Windows Media Player Error Message Help
You've encountered error message C00D1199 while using Windows Media Player. The following information might help you troubleshoot the issue.

Cannot play the file
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. You might encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:

The file type is not supported by the Player. For a list of file types (formats) that are supported by Windows Media Player, see the table on supported file types in this topic.

The file type is supported by the Player, but the file was compressed by using a codec that is not supported by the Player.

Your sound card or sound controller is not configured properly. Try changing the audio output device associated with the Player.

To change the audio output device
Click the arrow below the Now Playing tab, and then click More Options.

Click the Devices tab, and then double-click Speakers.

In the Audio device to use box, select a different sound card or sound controller.

The file type is supported, but you are trying to play it in a way that is not supported by the Player. For example, you might have tried to drag a DVD file with a .vob extension from a DVD to the Windows Media Player icon. Or you might have tried to open a .vob file by clicking Open on the File menu.

You are trying to play one part of a multipart file. Use a newsreader or other program to combine the files, and then try again.

Supported file types
The following table lists the file types (formats) that are supported by Windows Media Player.

If you cannot use a file that is included in this table, the file might have been encoded with a codec that is not supported by Windows Media Player.

File type (format)
File name extension

AU (UNIX) audio files
.au and .snd

Audio Interchange File Format (AIFF) audio files
.aif, .aifc, and .aiff

JPEG picture file

Macromedia Flash animation file

Microsoft Recorded TV Show

MP3 audio files

Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) audio files

Windows audio and video files
.avi and .wav

Windows Media audio and video files
.asf, .asx, .wax, .wm, .wma, .wmd, .wmp, .wmv, .wmx, .wpl, and .wvx

Windows Media Player skin file

Notes

To play DVDs, you must have a DVD-ROM drive and a software or hardware DVD decoder installed on your computer. If you do not have a compatible DVD decoder installed, DVD-related commands, options, and controls do not appear in the Player and you cannot play DVDs.

By default, Windows XP does not include a DVD decoder. For more information about DVD decoders for Windows XP, see the DVD Support in Windows XP Web page at the Microsoft Web site.

Some, but not all, versions of Windows Vista include a DVD decoder. For more information about DVD decoders for Windows Vista, see the DVD Playback Pack for Windows Vista Web page at the Microsoft Web site.

To play .mp2v and .dvr-ms files, you must have a software or hardware DVD decoder installed on your computer. For additional information about .dvr-ms support in Windows XP, see the Microsoft Download Center.

For more information on supported file types, in the Microsoft Knowledge Base, see article 316992, "Windows Media Player multimedia file formats."

Re: windows media player problems

First, don't download movies from Limewire. It could just be a bullshit file.

Second, download K-lite code pack (Google it). If it still doesn't play then the file is probably BS.

I use The Core Media Player. It plays videos a lot smoother than VLC.
