windows media player problems

windows media player problems
ok so i spent the last 36 hours (------- long time) dling the new pirates of the caribean movie from limewire and its an .avi file. now when i go to play it it tells me "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."
it gives me the options to close or to click on web help. when i click on web help it brings up a bunch of ---- i dont understand.

For example, you might have tried to drag a DVD file with a .vob extension from a DVD to the Windows Media Player icon. Or you might have tried to open a .vob file by clicking Open on the File menu.
You are trying to play one part of a multipart file. Use a newsreader or other program to combine the files, and then try again.

ok so is there any way (free) to play this damn movie? the comp is a 3 month old gateway m1617 laptop with windows vista, if you need any other info just ask me as dumb as you can and ill try to get the right info for you.
