You can buy a digital Multimeter with a Bead type thermocouple for arround 20$
THe install will not be as neat as a proper EGT setup but it will work upto 1000c

I dont think that helps since we all need up to 1500, cars usually operate between 1000 and 1200

Yeah it works upto 1200c
Well what it works upto is more to do with the type of thermocouple you use.
I think they Multi meters come with J or K type which is good to 1200c

As to using those gauges which dont need power. Your wasting your money.
You need something with cold junction compensation, and thermocuple auto calibration.

Some info on a Digital EGT we once built

Sorry you have to sign up to view it.
No we dont sell them anymore. The demand was not enoughf so the design was scraped.
But if you read the post youll know what to look for in an acurate EGT gauge.
If your ok with +- 100c error the analogue units are ok. If you study the output curve of an EGT probe of Temp vs Voltage you will understand why its hard to keep them acurate.

I have an aircraft spruce thermocouple I'm going to hook up to an autometer guage. Only thing its an exhaust thermocouple, not a manifold plenum one..

1000 C = 1832 F
1200 C = 2192 F

EGT's are not very useful. They are a pretty useless gauge.

Put the money towards a wideband instead, it is something that you can at least use.

You obviously don't know how to read one then. EGT is NOT useless. Get a clue.
