we haev an mk1 cabriolet thats getting redone (probably aba turbo), an mk2 gti 1.8 8v (going 2.0 16v) and an mk3 golf that I have yet to decide the future of.

p.s. Most vw owners only care about wheels and low. The "OMG RONALS AND FULL COIL OVERS so Low I hAVe a BONawr" type. so i hope your not one of those homo's

Re: Where are all the Old School watercooled Volkswagens?

Haha nah im not one of those... i used to be a Z car driver and got into these on accident really....

right now i am running a NA 1.8 Liter 16v

But i have some parts laying around waiting to be put together:

2.0 16v (9a) w/ 9.0:1 CR je pistons the head was sent out to 034efi for p&p and knife edge
Im going to be running 034efi for Standalone bbm fuel rail w/ 42 pound injectors replaces the CIS 8)
Full Billet aluminum pulley (under drive, water pump, and alternator)
Auto Tech Adjustable Cam gear (full aluminum) as well as aluminum intermediate shaft gear
I just picked up a nice turbonetics t3 manifold (only paid 170 bucks for it)
Im planning on running a Tbird compressor i don tknow too much about it .. but i know it'sa a Warner-ishi IHI i think that is a 45 trim .48/.60 i just figured you got a 2.3 liter 4 banger pushing 190 hp so that should do fine for my 2.0 :) i dont know i have alot of stuff on the way and ready for the build up... should be fun....

Re: Where are all the Old School watercooled Volkswagens?

vw's are great cars! dont ever doubt them they will last forever if you do simple maintance. they are a little harder to modify because you cant just chip your ECU, and the aftermarket parts scene is a lot more low key (ie. less advertising, less magazine full page adds) and there is a lot more people doing custom maching and stuff to make their performance parts..... awesome cars, the 16v is an awesome var, the 2l and the 1.8 16v are almost the same, the 2l has shitty flowing intake ports and awesome exhaust, and the 1.8 has shitty exhaust but awesome intake ports, the intake manifold is a little hard to deal with if you wanna kep the over head design, if thats teh route you want a 50mm runner one will fix you up good and if not you will have to switch to a log style one which you will more than likely have to change your TB, the TB on the stock 16v is fucked and useless, there is no real need for teh second butterfly valve, find a 12v VR6 TB and you're set

mk2mike 04-06-2006 05:59 PM

Re: Where are all the Old School watercooled Volkswagens?

Well intake manifold wise im actually going to be chopping a 1.8t manifold and welding it onto the 16v lower intake runners so first of all it give me more room for boost piping and then it changes my inlet over to the right side, ya ya i can do that with a rocca 16v manifold but the 1.8t has a larger plenem ... as for the shitty flowing intake ports on the 2.0 head hehe that is why it was sent out to 034... yeah you can port out the 1.8 head more because more room to work w/ (water jacket wise)... Power wise im aiming for about 250 horsepower honestly i dont want to be crazy fast or anything i just want some more power and anything is fine with me :)

As for throttle bodys... im just going to use the 1.8t throttle body because i need somethign w/ tps for the standalone....

And yes sailman is right, volkswagens tend to be a little more work to modify... you cant just go down to the local Autozone and purchase parts for them. The main source for parts is other volkswagen drivers manufacturing products in their garage....

sailman 04-06-2006 06:01 PM

Re: Where are all the Old School watercooled Volkswagens?

the 1.8t chop is exactly what i woudl do myself, good choice, the only thing you have to worry about is getting good weld when you do it, ive heard some bad stories, theres something about the metal that makes it not wanna take without really good prep work

Yeah it is a little hard welding forged aluminum together but i know a guy in Fresno, CA (not too far from me) that can do it very easily :)

Yeah i was reallllly thinking of going with the AEB (1.8t) Motor I hear so many succes stories that make me excited but im not also willing to fork out 2g's for a motor and tranny right now just to have to upgrade the turbo.... because if anyone has seen a stock 1.8t turbo you'll laughe the K03 is a small small turbo (though produces decent power). Yeah here is a pic of my GLi right now i dont have much done to it right now... i have the Dual Round Badgeless Bonrath Grille,Kamei Grille spoiler, 90 Spec bumpers, Waiting to get some 90 spec sideskirts and g60 flairs. Smoked Turns and side markers. Techtonics Tuning 2.5" Stainless mandrel bent exhause straight back into a Borla resinator and Borla oval muffler.... Sounds nice i think right now but when the new motor is in and Boosted Should sound Nicer :)

Attachment 35121

Yeah im going to St. Louis, Missouri for a month so my project is going to have a little set back but when i get back i'll start the build up and some pics ;)

yeah, tire streching is ------- gay. I dont know why its cool in the volkswagen scene. It makes the tire look like its shitting the rim out.

My experience working on VW's is limited to syran wrapping my friend's VW Fox.

http://www.hmt-tv.com/hmt/matt/MVC-015F.JPG

I got drunk one night camping out and passed out in the car while it was running. The thing overheated and ran for 6+ hours overheating. It got so hot it melted the gagecluster and vents. I'm lucky I didn't die :l

VW's are one type of car that I just can't get into :-\

Re: Where are all the Old School watercooled Volkswagens?

Being a VW person i can agree with you guys that yeah we do have some weird visions... such as our wide wheel/ tire stretching weirdness.... See the thing that motivates us to tire streching is trying to be like the old porsches i think. They had pimp ass rims w/ deep dishes.... we want to get the same thing but can not fit large rims on our cars... so we get a 0 offeset or neg offset rim to achieve that dish, and in order to clear we cut fenders and stretch tires to achieve the angle on the tires to fit under the fender.... see if you ever look at a mk1 or mk2 jetta/gti with 17's it looks horrible most of the time because the wheels are just tooo large looking... so it really limits us to 15 inch max to look good....

With old Vw's youll see there is alot of old Porsche parts going into them.. or old bmw parts...

And on the last note... Yeah we are a weird bunch of people but you'll learn that EVERY vw person mk1 and mk2 person at least can get along with the other. No matter what... there hasn't been one vw person i meet that i haven't been able to get along with.... but you see tension between honda people all the time... thtas what i dont get O0
