You could also see if you can get access to a university clean room. But that seems unlikely.
---- yes. The next autotragic transmission I build, im going to do it in the bathroom. Hell yeah.

Hard-drive was spinning but I wasn't seeing any read/write action. Tried to go to My Computer to see if it was appearing, and My Computer froze, so I knew it was "waiting" for the drive to become available. So, I go to shut the computer down so I can power off the hard-drive.

Windows takes forever to shut down. Gives me errors that it was unable to write to the files I was downloading on bittorrent. Bad news. Drive was still spinning.

Forced the computer to turn off, and turned off the drive. Powered both back on and now it doesn't appear in My Computer. ----. Listen to the hard-drive, no spinning but I hear a constant "click click click."

Now if it was a drive full of ---- I downloaded, I really wouldn't care. Being that it's a drive full of ALL my pictures, documents, ebooks, 50gb of music, roms, etc etc etc...all the ---- I want to keep during a format, I'M VERY ----------ING PISSED. I never heard any scraping or grinding, so I'm hoping either the logic board failed, or in a better situation the head is just stuck.

I have two options here:
1. Open the drive and risk contamination, but possibly "unstick" the head so it'll work and I can retrieve the data
2. Pay a company hundreds of dollars to attempt to fix it

I really want to try the first option because it's free and I think the head is just stuck, but a ------- particle of dust can make it permanently unrecoverable. Here's an image to give you an idea of how small the gap is:

That is supposedly an old picture and newer high capacity drives have even smaller gaps than that.

The click is the read/write head moving back and forth. You have better luck with the drive magically working again than you do with opening it up. I have had the freezer trick help me recover data off a failing/failed hdd before.

Dude that's fucked up.

The reason i said Its funny you should say that is cause i told Josher that in a PM. well in that pm i also told him i was recovering a hd at the time and since it was still rolling today i figured i should gracefully cancel the scan and just try it again.

Why did i turn the external off. why. I'm smarter than that and have always just pulled the usb. why power it off.

I powered the bitch off.

turned it back on and heard *chick* c-c-c-c-chick*

Mother.

******.

I guess that's what happens when you're constantly downloading 24x7 at 500-1500kbps. I'm sure it got quite warm, everything had a little thermal expansion, and that 2-millionths of an inch became 0-millionths of an inch.

Wanna hear some more crazy ----?

That drive I ordered the morning before my harddrive failed, well I got it Monday. Was somewhat a relief even though I was still pissed about all the data I lost. Hooked it up...click..click..click..click.

So, paid $9 to have it shipped back to newegg for a refund. Looked up that model online and apparently that particular brand/factory/firmware/model has caused a lot of people trouble. It didn't help that the drive I received had absolutely no bubble wrap, was just in its anti-static bag. Of course, by time I received it, it had sunk to the bottom of the box and probably endured a bit of abuse.

Instead, I'm going to spend $50 more and take a risk on their 1.5tb drive, or maybe go with a smaller 1tb Western Digital.
