whats your fastest engine swap time?

Power tools are outta the question cause this is for the men who don't have that ---- and don't need them or don't have room for a compressor in there tiny garages. I pulled a one engine(y7) still hot by myself and intalled the new (z6) engine and boosted it in one day with no power tools and no help.Pulled her in saturday afternoon about 4pm and worked till 10pm and ate supper in between and woke up sunday and worked from 9am till 1pm and cranked her over boosted and no CEL's vtec working and boosting. I surprised myself that I could do it that fast or am I slow? ::)

I can usually pull a motor, rebuild it and put in back in, in about 45 to 50 minutes

i call bullshit. ;)

in 50mins i can usually order all the parts, pull a motor, get all the parts in the mail, install, rebuild a turbo and rail the neighbor girl.

on a serious note, i can pull my motor in well under 2hours without power tools of any sort. and a tranny by myself in under an hour.

suppose it doesn't help that half the bolts are already loose. ;)

OKay and now some real times. ::) It takes me usually like 45 minutes to pull the tranny off and it's nothing to me now but this was my first swap by myself and no friend helping out or even here to let me know if I'm forgeting anything.

Not bad. I bought a motor on friday installed over the weekend and drove it to work on monday. tuesday coming home I gun and push it to 14psi(on a z6 :P) and blow the main seal. I had good running motor for basically two days. Beat that!

did you make that video the 1st night on 14psi?

did you have your pcv valve hooked up right

stillnoturbo 10-08-2004 10:04 AM

Re:whats your fastest engine swap time?

naw I didn't boost the 14psi until tuesday and I drove the car to work this past monday then coming home from work on tuesday I gave it a little too much throttle. First tiume the charge pipe blew off and next time the seal went

Re:whats your fastest engine swap time?

well, its all a matter of how lazy your mood is at the time of swapping. I did my tranny in 4 hours by myself ( had the neighbor give me a hand when lining the tranny back after swapping the clutch.

My and -------- have had to swap out his old worn Z6 with a new long block and swap trannies all withing a 6 hour period. and no power tools!

Re:whats your fastest engine swap time?

I did a b series swap into my hatch in 4 hours using only basic tools which included, 10 mm, 12 mm,14 mm, 17 mm, 19mm, and 32 mm for the axle nuts, punch for the spring pin for the shiftlinkage, and ball joint extractor thing. And of course a cherry picker. It took me 1 hour to pull the damn cx motor out. I didnt care how messy it got with the fluid and ---- cuz it was at my mom's garage. After i got it out, it took me 3 hours to put everything back.

This was done on a b18b swap, so it was pretty much plug and play. My mom and stepdad can vouch for my swap. Cuz they came outside several time trying to get me to eat, I would yelled at them cuz i wanted to get the damn thing done lol.

But now and days I live in Utah and all my tools are at Nebraska. I have to improvise to get the motor out and in w/0 a cherry picker. And also the driveway condition and the whether I can get it done in 7 hours. This is with bunch of missing tools and pretty much going at my own rate.

to make the story short, one of my friend's friend saw my car and he had his girlfriend with him. Then his gf ask if i wanted to race. I said sure. Then she started make fun of my hatch saying if her bf race my hatch it would be a joke, cuz racing my hatch would be racing a geo metro. My setup is jdm h22 with lighten flywheel, act clutch, basic i/h/e. But i told her it was stock. But i do like the wrx. I dont have anything against suburu's. His was stock too. She kept talking ---- like it would be a waste of time, my ass would of got own, and more ---- to piss me off. She was being cocky cuz they barely bought the wrx like couple months ago. I didnt say anything cuz it was my friends's freind girlfriend. I have repsect for ppl. But after that they still didnt want to race. I guess they view the wrx being top dog, and my hatch being nothing performance wise. I think she wanted me to response and say no i shouldnt race but i said yes. Maybe i should say no to everybody that wants to race me. Oh well that's how its always gonna be, viewed as a grocery getter. And it wasnt even me trying to egg them on. So yeah thats the story. Plus I dont back out from races even if the odds are against me. :)

A couple of weeks ago me and my friend pulled out my motor and turbo kit . Transfered trans, intake mani, oil pan, wires etc to the new motor. Put it all in. Hooked up turbo all in about 8 hours. To bad the fucker didnt start.

Re:whats your fastest engine swap time?

most of my honda swaps only take anywhere from 5-8 hours... If our LS-Vtecs are put together and ready to drop in, itll take about 10-12 hours if we have to make our shift linkage and ghetto rig the wiring harness and little probs like that... like putting an LS-Vtec into myfriends 97 DX 4 dr civic...

More boost and shitty ring seal = piston blowby.
Excessive piston blowby = pressurized crankcase.
Pressurized crankcase = blow oil past the main seal.

With help, getting a motor out of the car should only take you half an hour or 45 min. putting one back in shouldn't take too long either. the longest part for me is realizing that you did the whole wiring harness in red wire and taking 1927483 years to figure out which red wire goes where.

I've doen a swap or 2... Nothing to brag about because each time I do a swap Im always teaching someone what does what and how it goes togeathor ect ect. But I don't think that anyone can beat my record on removoing the pass. side axle and putting another one in and filling tranny = 22min. It took another few min to double check everything and clean it all up so I could back the car out. I got really good at takin axles out cause I kept having to replace the axle seal....4 times thank you very much!

Re:whats your fastest engine swap time?

Me and beau have do swaps all the time, if its a D for D in a EG/EF/EK without PS and AC, your easily talking 2 hours tops in and out.

I'm not trying to brag, but I can rip these engines in and out so ------- fast people sometimes dont believe I do it. Example tommorow I'm doing a D15 to ZC swap, it should be real easy in & out.

You dont even need a fancy lift or even air tools for swaps to be this fast. I use electric impacts 3/8 and 1/2 guns and I never remove the tranny when doing a D swap. Harnesses always stays on the engine and comes off when is out of the car.

Maybe we should do a live web cam stream tommorow, haha..
