What would you do?

So, you're leaving work and drive up to the bank. You're responsible for doing the end-of-day deposit from your office at the bank. You go up to the drawer, ready to unlock it, but notice it's already open and there's somebody else's key in it. In the drawer is their envelope. Looks like there is something in it. The bank is closed, and there's no drop slot in their front door either. You have no idea who this other deposit belongs to.

What do you do?

Re: What would you do?

A good bank has cameras watching that ----, so they would know what happens to everything going on at every possible area of the bank.

A shady bank that doesn't have good security is fucked and deserves to be fucked (IMO). Take between $100 and up to 1/2 of the money in the envelope and then leave. Do your deposit 3 hours later. :)

Re: What would you do?

Two holes in your logic.

For some reason, there is no camera there. It's outside the building by the drive up window. Keep in mind this is a brand new BofA branch, not some shady -----bank.

Second, you're not ------- the bank. You're ------- the person who left their money there by accident. Who will almost certainly lose their job over it, then you're ------- their family, the business-owner, etc.

You'd still take the money?

Re: What would you do?

I am lost on the story line?

What drawer are you unlocking?

I get that you

Left Work, so what drawer do you have to unlock at the bank?

Re: What would you do?

Outside most every bank there is a drawer that pulls down that you drop deposits into. This is normally for businesses who want to deposit their cash for the day after the bank is already closed, and you have to have a key to open it.

okay that makes sense now. The ones at my bank are just automatic, no keys. put it in and it drops it down. no chance of it staying in there.

I would have just dropped it in there after your deposit. Even if it is unmarked, you are off the hook for being involved with it.

Re: What would you do?

man thats a tough ------- choice man, are you currently faced with this situation? have you possession of the envelope?

i would take the money but, you are not definately ------- them, you got to see how much is the envelope to see whether your ------- them or not, this depends on the amount of moohlah. if itss alot your ------ em if it is under a grand ---- it anyone could use that. lots of HMT ---- with a lil money ya know. Bad Karma though, i have no0 clue what i would do?

That is backwards. Consider this. What would you risk getting convicted of theft for? less than $1k and you face a felony?

true like i said its very tuff choice no matter what. I really wanna know if this dude has the envelope or what he did in this situation

I can't really comment on that right now, i'm just really interested in what members of this board would do.

Re: What would you do?

well i wouldn`t really take the $ if i am not SUPER Muda------- tight on cash.

What could happend to the other guy is not limited to the possibility of just getting fired. He might be the owner of the business which IMO MIGHT be ok for me to keep the stuff inside. He might need the money to fill a debt, it could be the money that some one needed oversea to pay for a operation.

It could be me that did the deposit, i would get fired, get invesgate, lose my job, not being able to pay my payment/rent on time, I lost my house, my car, have to take bus, not being able to feed the wife and kid, finally my wife and kid left me. i become a bum on the street, or eventrully ended myself.

return it if u have an idea of who that belongs to.

jaykew99 08-04-2005 01:52 AM

Re: What would you do?

i still say a really key factor is how much it is seriously that way you can somewhat get a feel of how important it is.

everyone knows whats "right" and "wrong", it all depends on your gut feeling man, what you think is the best choice.

I hope you didn't take it. Thieves need to be shot in the head. Or like in other countries their hands chopped off.

So you can't comment on leaving the money in there and doing the right thing? ::)

I wouldn't do the whole "morality play" deal. Consider the pro's and con's.

All people having made deposits will be looked at. You will be one of them. You will have to lie to the cops (Crime), about stealing the money (Crime). If they do find it to be you, then you are up ---- creek for just $$ that you could have let sit :-\ . Not worth the stain on the reccord, IMO.

Re: What would you do?

I wouldn't think twice about taking it and thats the honest truth. I'm hoping you didn't screw yourself.
Now if it was a jackie brown situation...then I'd take the bag ;)

AgentMurdoc 08-04-2005 02:41 AM

Re: What would you do?

okay one. If you left it there go back and take it. If you leave it there, someone else is going to take it, so if anyone is gonna gain from it, it might as well be you. But if I were you, I would take it and bring it into the bank in the morning, cause for a damn sure someone is gonna be bitching about lost money. Cause you say it's a business's deposit, that must be at least 2k upwards of 5kish maybe? Depeding on the type of venue.

Or just be annoyomous and call the bank from a pay phone and ask if anyone came in about a lost deposit. That way if it isn't claimed you keep it. :P No reason to let the bank gain from it.

As much as I would love to keep the money, I would see if there is a way to return it first, cause I would be pissed losing money in that amount. As a person that has managed a business before, the daily deposit is very very important. And sometimes the deposit isn't even daily, but a few days worth, which sucks even more.

Re: What would you do?

The animal hospital I work at does like 3day deposits and that place makes mad bank, I know that would be a shitty deposit to lose. But, the owner does all the drops and they make so much profit that I think they'd still live without it. So basically, I guess you cant really decide what to do without knowing the background of the person that dropped it off.

Re: What would you do?

heres my $.02.
if its a new bank, i would be almost certain there is some sort of monitering system somewhere. if anything, they have a camera that moniters who drives through that area. not sayin that couldnt be beat, but im sayin im sure its there. look at how they could investigate it. the people who deposited the money could say, they deposited it around 9pm (example) they go back to the moniters and look...it wouldnt be to hard.

also, watch cops...that ---- could be a set-up. :P

what would I do....well, im a firm believer in "what goes around comes around" its happened to me one to many times in one way shaper or form.
i would probably be the good guy pick it up, and then take it to the bank in the morning.

AgentMurdoc 08-04-2005 03:27 AM

Re: What would you do?

well I'm not one that believes in what come around goes around much, but it just sucks to have to suffer that kind of lose. What drives my decision is how it feels to lose that much money, I know how it feels and the shittyness that follows. :-\

Cause when I was managing this business, the deposits were extremely critical, as they were needed to pay the bills of the establishment that have already been sent out, and the deposit is extremely important to make sure the checks cleared. Of course there are those businesses that just rake in the money and it won't affect them much.

And frank makes a good point what if it is a set-up =P.

Also it is hard for me to imagine a BofA not having cameras. You know the little black square on the atm, there is usually a camera behind it. You know the square next to the mirror.

this is one of those shitty morality questions they use at every leadership and ethics workshop ive ever taken.. the answer plane jane.. its not your money you didnt do anything to directly result in said money to be yours.. its apples to apples with stealing the shirt off your fathers back.. its not right.

willahlborn 08-04-2005 08:28 AM

Re: What would you do?

Okay, here's the truth. The ------- idiot who left the money in the drop was me.

I must have been distracted and ---- when I was dropping the money, my fiancee was in the car with me and I know she was bitching about something so... anyhow, I have no excuse, I ------- left my key in the lock and left the deposit in the open drawer. We drove home. About an hour later, I notice my bank key is not on my keychain and ---- my pants. I haul ass back to the bank... what do I find? The drawer is shut, and my key is sitting out of plain view on top of a ledge above the drawer. I can't exactly break into the bank at 8 pm to see if somebody was being a good samaritain (sp) and closed the drawer for me, so I have been sweating this all damn night. Did somebody take the money? Did somebody do the right thing? Did somebody take a few bucks and THEN deposit the money? I still don't know. The bank opens in one hour and thirty three minutes and i'll be damned if i'm not their first phone call... I know all the people at that bank. So, we'll see if i'm royally fucked or not.

EDIT: There have been alot of good responses from people who obviously know what being responsible for money is all about. And for those of you who would take the money... I hope it wasn't some ------- drifter who found my mistake first, because i'm pretty sure the only sort of person who would have taken the money is somebody on foot wandering around the bank. In the dark. I figure if somebody drove up to do their OWN deposit, and saw what I left there, they would be faced with this morality issue. Then they would probably think of what to happen to THEM if they lost their OWN deposit, and close the drawer for me. The drawer is in a otherwise isolated part of the side of the bank, and you probably wouldn't notice it unless you had to go do a deposit there...

Re: What would you do?

I had a situation like this happen to me just last week. Guy was getting some cash from a drive up ATM.
He drives off and I drive up to get cash.

On the screen it says "do you need more time."
I realize that the guy left his card in the machine and that the pin is still active.
I have the chance to take him for all his account, or tell him.
I immediately honk the horn and flash the lights as the guy is almost pulling out onto the road.
He backs up all confused and kind of mad. I then hand him his card.
The look on his face was priceless as he realized his folly.

I do believe that what you do will come back to you.

Congrats on not getting screwed.

Re: What would you do?

Too all of you who would take the money, whether you know or realize it you are completely destroying your own self-esteem and self worth if you take that money. You'd probably do more harm than good by taking that money to your own self than the person who left it there.

We are all faced with moral dilemas in life, throughout life, and who we are and who we develop into as childen, adolescents, young adults to old people are all consequences of the choices we make and the actions we take.

Remember that the next time a situation presents itself to you such as this...

Re: What would you do?

that good to hear buddy. :)

That's why i NEVER use the atm or what nots to do deposits. I ALWAYS go into the branch to make deposits, whether it was the business account or my personal account. I just don't trust that ----.

I'm gonna say it was over 3k but less than 5 :P
