for the love of god stay away from neon. the head gaskets on them are known u fail repetely and dodge is aware of the problem but doesnt absorb any of the cost of replace the gasket on that piece of ----. for anyone stay away from crysler, jeep , dodge ; they are the biggest pieces of ----. just do a search on "neon head gastket problem"

The Nissan Sentra is my personal favorite cheap but bullet proof car. I had one that I sold to my next door neighbors son when he went off to college four years ago, it had 165,000 on it then and had been hit in the rear but was still drivable. I dont know how many miles are on it now but it looks like it has been to war and back and its still going strong, he told me the other day that the only thing he has had to do to it was a new starter and a battery. Get a 91 or newer the older ones were crap.

I had a 91 Dodge Spirit with the 2.5L 4 cylinder in it. That thing ran forever. I actually had to put effort into blowing it up. Finally a wrist pin let go.

DOn't make it out be a big conspiracy, the haed gasket go's every 80k or so. My brother had one, it was the only repair other than regular maintenance for 4.5 years. And he bought it with 60+k on it. They make the headgasket go, it's engineered that way, and really for what else it's a really cheap car to run.

Besides we all know that toyota has really shitty head gaskets.

I would say an older protege early 90's, I know of a few that are kicking strong well above the 300k mark.

yeah the only honda that qualifies as "sports car" ;D is a S2K, civics are "economy cars" :P
And changing ur head gasket can run around 500+ if u take it to ur friendly ready to rip u off dyaimler crystler dealer

Re:What are some cheap, but reliable cars?

Don't get a Neon, there are lots of problems with them besides the head gaskets. There are over thirty pages of technical service bulletins on the fron suspension alone. It had the most technical service bulletins of any car ever made until the Ford Focus came along.
The Chevy Cavalier is a good cheap ride, the Sunbird had a different engine and was crap(back in the early 90s), Saturns are goog cars that can be had for a song, they are almost out of business anyway. The VW Golf/Jetta is good for the money, if you dont mind the cheap plastic trim parts falling off all the time, and as much as I don't like to admit this, the Ford Escort is not that bad, there are very few reliability issues with it, but you would be stuck driving an Escort!

A mid to late 80's Volvo 240DL. Its a tank! Can't be beat. I used to work for Volvo and we had numerous ones come throught the shop for regular maintenance with 400,000+ Miles!!! Great economy car now! Pricey back then. Check those out or even a 740.

I had a Geo Tracker 4wd and that thing took a licking and kept on ticking. Hell the only thing that ever broke on it was the hubs for looking the front wheels but drove perfectly but the 4wd didn't work. It may be a tracker but that thing could handle it's own and I beat my friend del sol with a y7 with the 4wd on and lit em up and then he beat after 2nd but that thing grabbed and launched like a rocket, that's probaly why the hubs broke?
