What should I do to my hatch with $4500?
Should I...
(A) Finish assembling my LS block and finish my LS/vtec swap for ungodly n/a slowness but reliable driving, or... (B) Do a budget boost build on my b16a with some cheepo forged rods and pistons and some ching chang turbo parts and cut down my reliability but raise my fun level to driver's license losing heights? ;D My fiance ok'd me taking out a loan to "fix" up my hatch and said it would be a shame for me to sell the car when I have so much work into it. Maybe I'll finally buy that gay-dm SiR nose swap I always wanted for it and some decent 15" wheels. 8) Either way both motors need work, the b16 burns oil and has lower compression than it should, the LS needs to be finished off and should be over-bored but I basically have most of the n/a parts for it and my ITB setup I've been working on. :-\ |

So far new wheels and a traction bar are highest on the list, followed by a few doodads for completing my obd1 swap, then misc. stuff for maintenance purposes like a new steering rack and spherical bearings for the rear trailing arms. |

$4500 could give you one hell of a ride, and you could afford your jdm bullcrap as well I guess :l. But built block, monster turbo, suspension parts galore etc could easily be under 4500. Get to it! :6 |
Re: What should I do to my hatch with $4500?
put a small portion of it into your car, make it look pretty, go take some super sexy pics of it, put it on honda-tech for some ungodly amount of money...sell it and get something you wont have to worry about.

One other thing I just thought of...if I'm going to end up dumping all this money into the LS block for some sort of LS/vtec build, why not just go get a low-mileage jdm b20 and swap the head onto that? I can already use my pr4 rods with the ARP hardware, then just get a set of 84mm type-r clones and hope there's enough piston to valve clearance lol. Uber amounts of torque for an n/a setup, and 200whp easily within reach for not much more than what I'd end up spending on this LS block. :l |
Re: What should I do to my hatch with $4500?
I say LS engine + boost. Sell the Vtec head and ---- on H-T. More power less $$.
|
Re: What should I do to my hatch with $4500?
If all your looking for is 200whp I'd do the B20Vtec with tt rods and SRP high comp pistons. Then build up the head.
That's what I'm doing with the LS/Vtec in my car. It hauls some serious ass already and I don't even have the head done yet. Just the built bottom end. |

Re: What should I do to my hatch with $4500?
Let me give you some advice first hand, modifying a car is a fun and all but its a money pit, and taking out a loan to do so is something you will regret.

Plus its a low mileage block aka reuse bearings and stock rods just need a set of arp rod bolts |

Re: What should I do to my hatch with $4500?
I look at it this way, either I'll end up with another car note for $20k plus, or I can take out an extremely low interest rate loan through the federal credit union where I work and they automatically deduct the payment form my paycheck.
This isn't my daily driver, I only drive it for about 3-4 months out of the year during the summer, and I have an '04 wrx that I drive most of the time. Basically the car is my outlet for relaxation and recreation, and honestly I don't really care how much I spend on it lol. I was leaning more towards the n/a side for autocross class reasons, but I know boost would be my best bang for the buck. Yes, the car's almost 20 years old, but the interchangeability of parts and the amount of them and the ease of working on it really holds more sway over me than buying something new that sucks to work on. |

Re: What should I do to my hatch with $4500?
Boost is def. going to be in the car's future again, but reliability this time has to be king ----. I'm tired of leaky exhaust gaskets/leaky return lines/overheating/heatsoak issues, so I guess the next question would be...which block should I build? ;D Still got those pistons you mentioned to me from last year JD? ;) |
