Website builders need help

alright I finished my site, I built it with Macromedia Dreamweaver, all documents are HTML. I bought the domain name from godaddy and bought hosting from E-host. Now how the ---- do I upload my files to my site?

Since I have 4 websites, I'll be the first to admit. I don't know. ;D

Look for something called "Manage my site" or "File Manager" or something of the sort, and then upload it to there...

Re: Website builders need help

whitey, go to godaddy's site and login.

click on my account

click on hosting and email

web hosting database from the dropdown menu

that will bring you to the host manager.
now on the left side click content.

that will bring down another dropdown menu.

from there click on ftp client and you should be all set to upload your files onto the site.

you should be able to figure out where to go from there.

Thanks. But I'm not using godaddy for hosting. I think I got this figured out but they said:

"In the FTP Host field, enter your domain name without the www prefix. For example:

sampledomain.com

If it has been less than 72 hours since you set up your account, you may need to use your temporary URL instead of your domain name."

I think this is whats ------- with me becuase it says cannot connect or some ----

Also WTF is Propagation?

The movement of a wave through a medium? How did they use it

edit:

Could mean "starting something"... I never understood why these companies don't use simple English :8

Propogation is for your domain name to ------ out to all of the DNS servers. That way when someone types in whiteysex.com or whatever, their ISP will know where to send them.

I'd recommend you just ditch your godaddy service and go with a service called 1and1.com
Their hosting is badass and their prices are the best i've ever seen.
Using their service you can upload everything via their file manager or FTP.

"An FTP error occured. cannot mmake connection to host. Dreamweaver could not connect becuase the server is down or not accepting connections"

So is this my fault and something I can fix or is it that the payment hasn't gone through yet or some ----?

I'm using Ehost.net for hosting. I just used godaddy to buy the domain name

Re: Website builders need help

Looks like a decent service even though there website is ------- terrible. You basically need to make an FTP account for yourself and log into it. If they use cpanel, then you can go to whitesex.com/cpanel/ and from there you can create an FTP account.

To get into your FTP account, you can just open IE and type in ftp.whiteysex.com and login. Or they might give you a different FTP address, but you really have to see. If you want to use a more professional tool, there is lots of software for managing FTP connections. I use WinSCP because its extremely secure.

I have an FTP account created but I can't log into it. I just keeps saying it can't make a connection to the host. If you know what I need to do post up. I gotta go to bed, I'll try any suggestion in the morning

thanks.

Whenever I have started up new pages it usually takes 24hrs or less for the stuff to be set-up so I can upload and edit stuff.

When you are entering the info into Dreamweaver have it test the login information. If that passes, then it is a site problem. Whenever I have uploaded stuff it is ftp, so most commonly you upload to ftp.yournamehere.com never used the www for it.

Have you set your dns servers in godaddy? Ehost should have sent you an email with the correct servers. If you havent't yet, do so. They also sent you a temporary ip address. YOu can use that temp. ip address to upload files until your domain has propogated. If this doesnt make sense, im more than happy to give u a hand.

Re: Website builders need help

You could always use a hacked copy of WS_FTP. All you need to enter is your domain FTP address (ftp.whiteysnewsite.com), usename (or ftp account name) and password. You could always use the file upload on your control panel, but I hate doing uploads one file at a time (or 5 at a time).

Sometimes it takes a day or three for everything to be set up, so you may need to give it a little time.

Thats the problem when I try and setup the remote info in Dreamweaver it doesn't make connection.

Yeah I got all that stuff and when I use the ip address I can upload files to the FTP site. My problem is now how do you turn those uploaded files into a "site"

Depending on how you design you web page, if it's a plain html, you should have an index.htm or index.html file under the root directory (usually www) of your site so that whenever somebody point to your website, the index file gets pull up. (index.php for php, index.asp for asp and so on..). If you don't have it (and the directory listing is able on your site), the listing of all your files/directory will show up when they try to access it.

I didnt know you are actually trying to do the whole dreamweaver thing. Some hosts may not support that sort of stuff, just like FrontPage extensions. Go with straight up html or php pages.

Alright, I'm pretty sure all of your problems root from your dependancy on Dreamweaver. After you make your design, you just need to copy all of your HTML into notepad documents and save them however the hell you want to save them.

Ok here's where I stand:

check this out i work for these folk so im pretty bad ass at dream weaver setup.

http://ipwhelp.com/index.php?id=20<---dream weaver setup instructions.

when your setting up dream weaver just use that ip address as the host name and the user name and password. dream weaver will proabably want to have you put in for host directory public_html or whatever your folder is with the website in it. make shure what ever is supposed to be the front page is called index.html if dream weaver doesnt do it rename it with smart after you upload the site. Dream weaver can do all the work for you dont need to use smart ftp unless you just want to upload little ---- on the side

Re: Website builders need help

go into httpd.conf and search for index.html and change that to main.html or whatever you have your main file called
then when you goto your site (www.whitey.com) it should point to the main.html file

what you see is what you dont get

with a new version of dreamweaver you should be ok... make a style sheet instead of doing everything individually

I'm using dreamweaver 8 and I'm not ok. Everything is changed from font color to font size. Is there something I can change in cpanel to make it right?

I don't know what a style sheet is. When I opened my pages to preview them using internet explorer they all look the way they should. After I upload them to my webpage thats when they look different. So something is happening to them when they are uploaded. How do I prevent it from making changes

Holy ----. You need learn HTML. Once you know HTML and have a little experience, then you can learn javascript which essentially CSS. CSS = Cascading Style Sheets. Thats what he means by style sheets.

Forget dreamweaver, go to get an HTML book and start from square one.
Dreamweaver is a tool, not the entire means.

But why is it when I open the site I made in internet explorer it looks fine but then when I upload them to the internet they look different? I downloaded the file than from the FTP site and its all fucked up still when I try and view it on my desktop. So obviously the code is changing when going from my desktop to the FTP site. What is causing this?
