So far my experience with Host Gator is pretty positive. They are pretty highly ranked.

free dyndns redirect, then forward port 80 on your router (if ya have one) make sure also that your firewall isnt blocking port 80... then install WAMP http://www.wampserver.com/en/ i run a PhpBB forum for all my friends on a shitty computer i leave running at home :6 i'm a cheapass though, kinda sucks though cause i have a 378kb up. ::)

I use 1and1.com

Cheap, comes with a bunch of crap, never had any problems.

If you go with them, let me know so I can get some referral cash O0

This will almost never work in the states. Theres only one major ISP that doesn't block port 80. so pretty much every one on the forum will not be able to use this method. Could always use a diffrent port but that usually works out poorly.

I work for one of the biggest webhosting companys out there. If you want I could hook a few of you guys up with some test accounts and you can just kick back whatever you can. Let me know if your interested and I can figure out a way for you to contact me.

might that be comcast? i just assumed all major ISP's allowed it, funny too cause back when i had dialup (~5years ago) i did the same thing (i know the idea of web serving over dialup is disgusting)

hum, what kind of hosting would you be providing, or what kind of band width, space ?

Re: web hosting

it would be shared hosting
the specs are pretty generous. would be the same levels that godaddy and 1&1 offer.

standard mysql, php, perl and all that jazz.
of course with you guys it comes with no support and you would need to already have a domain name. plus id ask that you not abuse it. not to mention the accounts could up and disappear at any time since there "test" accounts.

I setup a few for myself a while back and every thing seems to be running smoothly. If you interested pm me or something and I will see what I can do. I will do the first 5 people or so that contact me.

Re: web hosting

I am hosting my personal site at home with Verizon DSL and an Linux apache setup(debian), have also used comcast which was ALOt easier to setup. I've used 1and1.com and crucialwebhost.com on my current forum but don't recommend them since they don't allow shell access.

if your only gonna have a low traffic site i'd honestly not even bother paying for hosting, just setup an apache server.

back when i setup my first box I used the page below to get me through the tough parts

http://www.dslwebserver.com/

Seriously the cheapest and best for the cash server. I host all of my sites through them. Signup through my link and save me some cash on my website payments!
