One of my supervisors at work showed me this yesterday, so a few people and I tried it out. So far everyone's been saying that it sped up their internet connection quite a bit, and mine's definitely a hell of alot faster. I know it works for DSL internet, not sure about cable although I don't see why not. Normal IE7 users can just click the top link and run the program from it's website, Firefox guys have to download it and run it from your desktop.
There's info on the website about how to use it, although for mine I ran through the tests, clicked optimal settings, apply changes, and then restarted windows. ------ flies now, and it's netted me a 3000kbps connection speed that runs that fast instead of like a 56k modem. :P Worth a shot if nothing else, and it keeps a log of your registry changes if you want to revert back.

No, this isn't a "steal faster connection and bandwidth from your ISP" type of deals. The program pretty much "redoes" your internet connection settings to speed it up and cut out the useless garbage that slows most connections down.

i would never download a program to config my net settings especially considering that you run it you are letting your system run it therefore you have just granted permission to embed a backdoor into your system. You cant exceed your cap your net is capable of client side, only server side. Most program that explain a speed booster is just something that sets your cache to a higher level and uses more memory of frequently downloaded sites.

Actually there's a few settings that won't technically increase your bandwidth (it's capped like you said) but will allow your computer to use the connection more efficiently (stuff like packet size). If you're using a packet size that's too big, it'll get divided into two packets even if it's only a couple bits too large. If it's too small, you're not using the connection at its highest potential.

Most of it is just cacheing more files on the harddrive though. Some also "prefetch" links on the page and puts them in the cache while you're reading the page, then if you click the prefetched link it will load almost instantly.

There's a tool called "Google Accelerator" that will load from GOOGLE's cache, which will increase the speed of the pageload if the google server is faster than the websites server (which it probably is). Google might also compress pages and decompress them at your computer to use less bandwidth since Google's server acts as a proxy with this tool, but I'm not sure.

Most software isn't going to jack your connection, that's just paranoia. Just use common sense while picking the software you use. It's not hard to tell what programs seem like spyware and which ones don't. Does this program run all the time? It keeps a log of registry changes. If it was doing ---- it shouldn't be doing, I doubt it'd tell you ANYTHING about the registry.

No, you run the program once, it reconfigures your settings based on ping results to several servers and configures your ethernet card for the fastest performance. It never runs again unless you physical run the program after that. I was a little skeptical at first too about the program, but if my supervisor has no qualms about using this program then I figured it was safe. The guy was the head of northrop/grumman's R&D for almost 15 years and helps setup some of the DoD networking and is incredibly ---- about what he puts on his personal computer. :P
