Microsoft is supposed to release build 7000 for public beta-testing soon, I'd just wait.

I don't think I'll like the taskbar on Windows 7, but the rest of it sounds good.

Re: Vista and/or Windows 7 users...

All vista CDs are the same except for 32 and 64 bit differences. It chooses which version to install when you enter the cd-key and it checks which version the cd-key was made for and then automatically selects the version of vista for you.
I install all vista computers with an ultimate version from a Vista Starter Disc that i got free.

Here's how do it off any vista cd.
1. Boot from cd.
2. Click on Install Now
3. The part where it asks you to input the key, skip it and then choose the version of vista that you want which would be Ultimate because it's better than all the others.
4. Choose the partion/hard drive to install onto, format anything that is neccesary
5. Let the install finish, and then download a bios emulator online that will activate it without a problem. I have been doing this for a year now with no problems, get all of the updates and always pass windows genuine tests. The emulator tricks vista into thinking that you have a bios with a vista key integrated into it and automatically activates it.

I can post the emulator that I use without a problem on here or link to it, let me know if you guys want it.

Well, this ISO is from the same group that I got the last one from. It didn't even ask a serial (or already had one entered), I picked x64, and then installed. Didn't have to use any emulator or do anything extra.

The comments for this torrent said not to set up a password the first time and to skip the serial. I don't know what significance the password is, but I'd wait until it's installed to set one up.

Re: Vista and/or Windows 7 users...

Here's the emulator.
http://rapidshare.de/files/41264284/...lator.zip.html

1. Download, unzip/extract the file.
2. Run it as administrator by right clicking it and clicking on Run as Administrator
3. Click OK
4. Select BIOS to emulate
5. Select Manufacturer that you want it to show in System Properties
6. Install Key
7. Activate
8. Wait for confirmations of selections/installs before you reboot, it might take a minute or two for them to pop up.
9. Reboot

Re: Vista and/or Windows 7 users...

Hm took 4 minutes to download the ISO, then 10 to add to a tgz file, then a couple more to figure out how their directories are parsed.

Anywho, anyone who needs more information just send me a message :-*

You should be able to download it quickly.

Here's the instructions straight from the horse's mouth:

The retail has the ability to upgrade from XP and OEM doesn't. Also, license policies and packaging is different.
Also, retail comes with 2 cds. One for 32bit and one for 64bit.

If a program works in 32bit vista it will work in 64bit without a problem because 64 bit has both32/64 systems for programs/applications. Go to the windows partion and look. It has a x86 folder for 32bit applications and a normal folder for 64bit applications. 64bit version is the king of all windows and it's now easy to use them as everybody makes drivers for them. A couple years ago, 64bit was much more rare and harder to use due to a shitty support of drivers or the lack of them.

I know, man.

I've been programming/building PCs for over a decade now, have a variety of certifications, and have worked tech jobs for around 5 years now.

You're right that years ago it was a pain in the ass simply because not much of the older hardware was compatible with it. Now, unless you're running some old or obscure hardware, you'll be alright. Under 64-bit OS, the 32-bit apps run on an emulation layer which doesn't harm performance noticeably because not much has to be "emulated." Vista might do a better job than XP, I don't know. A couple people I knew tried 64-bit XP and had problems, but then again it was years ago. Everyone will HAVE TO move to 64-bit soon, so don't know why the bitching. 32-bit can only address 4gb, while 64-bit can address 16 exabytes of ram.

I was just asking why a MS employee was saying 64-bit sucks, because I can't find a reason why it would.

jo, I pmed you.

There's versions of Windows 7 Build 7000 floating around, but it's only the 32-bit version so I'll be waiting.

I still don't see the big fuss about Vista, so haven't jumped on the anti-Vista bandwagon, but 7 is supposed to be an improved Vista with better resource use.

Just the fact that many things were way to similar to XP I guess I was hoping they would do something a little more different.. Mostly little stuff that I guess doesnt matter but it seemed like they tried too hard to meet a deadline. For example the display properties is exactly the same as XP - kind of lame for all the hype that was put into it. Also the file system was gonna include WinFS but they left that out late in the game

Well, you gotta realize most people prefer things to stay the same. Even if they move things around to make it "easier," people piss and moan that it's more difficult because it's not where they're used to it being. Windows 7's taskbar has both your closed and running application shortcuts similar to MacOS. I hope to hell that's optional.

Truth, there is some added functionality as well... I too really like Vista. Just as any MS OS offering, It takes a miknuter for most issues to be adressed, but thats what happens when you build something from the ground up. XP was a departure form the old NT code, Vista is entirely different than the XP base. 7 is based on Vista. It will be/is a leaner more robust Vist basically, with added support for hardware, Media Center, and a few other neat features.....

Jorsher PM me, I can get you something you might like to run and take a look at.

Re: Vista and/or Windows 7 users...

need some help guys...

so i just dl'd vista "extreme" and ran into a problem when adding RAM...

maybe its my MOBO, but I seem to have a problem adding more than 3gigs of RAM. (1 x 1gig and 1 x 2 gig)

supposedly the MOBO can handle 4gigs so i dont know (Gigabyte GA-945GCM-2C)

as soon as i put in 2 x 2gig sticks, i get an "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" error message. i have swapped out every combo of ram of what i have, and all sticks work just fine individually or any combo of up to 3 gigs. as soon as i go over that, errors pop up like crazy and cant even get to the desktop screen.

all sticks of ram are ddr2-6400 800mhz and NOT cheap sticks.

ive updated my MOBO drivers in vista and so on, and nothing will work.

i assume that since the board will see 3gigs fine, it should be able to see the 4th gig ok too, am i wrong?

any help would be great.

losesomethinbra 01-04-2009 08:07 PM

Re: Vista and/or Windows 7 users...

Def a hardware error... At least its just the ram. Either one of those sticks doesnt like running at that speed (if its not an identical pair) or the mobo is trying to make em both run too fast. Thats a budget board and prolly doesnt have a lot of options... Start by putting in the pair of 2gb sticks, go into bios, and set the speed down a little on the memory if you can. Its gonna be funny if you cant :8

Re: Vista and/or Windows 7 users...

And was that version of vista 64-bit?

Is it the motherboard that gives that error or the OS?

Does the BIOS see all 4gb?

32 bit version

the error happens as the Vista splash screen is coming up. It is a blue screen, that say, error "blah blah blah"..."IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"..."blah blah" hardware install of new device"..."blah blah"..."take out and restart"..."blah blah"...
