V-Tec questions

I have a d16z6 with a 15g turbo. I was wondering if there is any way of setting the point to where its kicks in without a vtec controller. I also believe that the vtec "shuts off" if the engine is hot.. it that right? And if so, how do i know when the vtec is gona work before a race for example. How do i know if it is "on" or "off". Sorry.. im kinda a newb.. and i dont know shizout about vtec. Any input at all.. or opionons even.. would be great.. thx

Re:V-Tec questions

Vtec works when hot, you have it backwards. When the engine is cold, vtec will not engauge. And no the only way you can modify the point of activation is with a rpm switch or vtec controller.

How do you know its on? well it will obviously be faster, and on single cams its a bit hard to hear, but you can hear the intake change sound.

this is what vtec sounds like near the end of the clip.. sounds like a DOHC vtec =)

Re:V-Tec questions

that sounds weak, the switch over isnt even that loud, I wouldnt be suprised if that was a single cam. My gf's old gsr was very loud.

---- you should hear vvtli on a toyota with a nice intake and exhaust, holy ----, puts vtec to shame.

Re:V-Tec questions

if u wanna be kinda ricey, and u wanna know when your VTEC kicks in on an SOHC, hook up and LED to your vtec (+) line...tap into it, and LEDs don't drain much power, so it won't effect anything

Re:V-Tec questions

holy ---- that scared teh crap out of me....i had my head phones on and i didnt know it was on so loud.....it wasnt loading so i was jsut chatting then i hear this loud rev haha almost shitted in my pants

Re:V-Tec questions

if you do get an LED.... make sure its a 12V....and not a 120V.... Im going to be testing this on a friends car... cause he thinks his VTEC isnt hitting anymore...

Let me rephrase that... make sure its for 12V applications... and not 120V... otherwise it wouldnt work

Re:V-Tec questions

I am pretty sure the vtec solenoid works off a 3v or 5v signal.

VTEC works on a 12V signal. Let me know if you want the pin out for it. ;) VTEC should kick in at 5500 RPM on all Honda and Acura motors sold in the US.

Re:V-Tec questions

Thats what my ecu is set at 12v's... but I thought that was just the zdyne, I could of swore I checked a sohc d16z6 with a multimeter and it was only going to 5.0v's... maybe I am wrong :(

CdTriX 01-22-2003 08:06 PM

Re:V-Tec questions

don't sohc vtec motors engage at 4800?

it's not good to set your vtec lower then the factory setting because you won't be making optimal power or fuel economy goes out the window....

doesn't vtec suck up gas since the valves are open longer then normal?

TurboEF9 01-22-2003 09:04 PM

Re:V-Tec questions

You set it lower than factory when you're running advanced fuel management, and modifications.

Having VTec open, when boost kicks in would be a good thing because more of the charge are will be in the cylinders.

That's just one idea..

My D16Z6 drops 12V to VTEC and all SOHC VTEC motors kick into VTEC at 5500 RPM stock.

Re:V-Tec questions

there is no way that gs-r is real....the thing would have to be like a 7 sec. car......or maybe less.....the thing goes 0-60 in under 4 seconds....i dunno this video seems kinda shady to me. but it seems real! im confused.

Re:V-Tec questions

0-60 in under 4 seconds isnt anywhere near a 7sec 1/4 mile time, its more like 12's i think...but i could be wrong

CRXzc903 01-24-2003 07:14 AM

Re:V-Tec questions

well, most of it im sure depends on gearing(i could be wrong)...but yea your right i over exaggerated on the 7 sec. 1\4 mile, its probably more like 11's\12's. but also the fastest civic ever could only go 216. and by the way that thing was going he could have gone up to like 240 cuz he was like at 220 and still climbing up good. he would be in every car magazine known to mankind.

Re:V-Tec questions

it is real.. i've been in the car... he recently got it stroked to 2.0L with a power FC, BIG TB, 14.6:1 CR, and an ITR tranny with LSD...

he HAD Individual throttle boddies but he couldn't get it to work properly... FREAKING LOUD AS ----!!!

the thing with his car is... he can't go to the track... there's too much hype about the car.. and if he goes and doesn't perform... he won't be able to show face around Toronto anymore...

would you go to the track with this type of street racing record?

crazy boosted 323GT
upgraded turbo 1.8T audi a4 Quattro
12.75 second in race trim.. 13.4 in street trim stripped EK with b18c5 with i/h/e
lots of C5s
96 camaro SS
various eagle talons/eclipse from FWD and AWD
eats TYPE R's for breakfast
highly modded VR6s
preludes, SiRs, 1.8ts

with all these kills... would you go to the track and run a 14.5? taht would be really shameful people also don't like him because he went NA... NA costs alot of money... but he says it's really reliable and gets pretty good fuel economy..

i also know a 350 hp turbo hyundai =)

Amallick 01-25-2003 11:29 AM

Re:V-Tec questions

i think it would be pretty funny if he went to the track and ran a 14.5. Just means all those other cars he beat are really slow. ;)

Re:V-Tec questions

whats wrong with a 14.5? :-\

Re:V-Tec questions

ive got a 95 vtec sohc and installed a vtec light

Re:V-Tec questions

I have a friend who just got a 2.5" cat back on his GSR and you can really hear the VTEC kick in. It sounds sooo freaking cool - makes me want to get a Z6 head for 91 civic. There's a guy at my school w/a Celica GT-S; I may try to get him to rev his engine a bit so I can see how much a difference the sound is between the two VTECish things

Re:V-Tec questions

cdtrix, where are you and your friend located...i want a race ...i watched the video and he hit 140 at a little over a mile and i did 145 in about 8 tenths ( if i remember correctly) the last time i got crazy in my vr4...or he could race my bone stock hatch if he wants, lol

CdTriX 02-10-2003 03:20 PM

Re:V-Tec questions

he's known as Tony the Tiger on honda tech =)

he lives in toronto but he won't race =) car's getting tuned and stuff... and he just finished up his turbo v6 camry and tuning his JRSC acura EL...

he's still tuning it he HAD ITB but he had to take them off couldn't get it to idle properly...

the GSR is real... that's with TODA SPEC B's =) and a 9200 redline... AWD cars have the advantage against FWD cars...and well... FWD is the most disadvantage in drag racing out of all the drivetrains.. haven't seen him race a highly modified wrx or has had a WRX up to his level up here... he's putting down aprox 230 whp soo that's kinda different to you AWD TURBO guys =)

wanna race a FWD 4g63 hyundai sonata? putting 350whp?

Re:V-Tec questions

SOHC Vtec comes in at 4800 RPMS. I'm positive of it. Secondly, yeah, that ITR is JDM (or has JDM cluster)- It's damn fast, but it's not rediculous. I you can time it in the video: 0-100 in 12.x seconds, 0-100 in 18.x seconds. Very fast, but very real...
