USB OBD2 scantools

I'm looking for a USB or bluetooth OBD2 scantool for use with my laptop. Being able to log data is important, it's half for tuning half for normal diagnosis. DOes anyone have any experience with these? I'm considering an ELM327 based unit, and am concerned with issues of broad compatibility, speed, etc. Does anybody have some experience they can spit at me?

I have no love for the overpriced under featured stand alone plastic boxes you get off of tool trucks, or useless code pullers. If that's all you know about and you have to post to this thread, just post porn or a thread jack instead of that stupid ----.

:)

ive ued one of the scantron things from autozone to do some logging/afc tuning on a 50 trim SRT4. wasnt terribly slow and easy to use.

Well, I already juarez'd this fine program (all versions, but PCMSCAN is all of them rolled into one), and would like to use it:

ill sell you a tactrix cable for $50 shipped with goodies in the box to fill the space

Re: USB OBD2 scantools

I have a Tactrix 1.3U cable, it does not work with this software. OBD Scan II does a slow-ish universal scantool function with the Tactrix cable, but the cable doesn't work with this.

I've used my OT1 to help tune a Toyota Tundra (i think) a while back....gave me all the info I needed with the "little black box" that was used for tuning.

12 samples/sec, meh. Is that single channel samples per sec, or entire info per sec? It also doesn't mention what protocols it supports.

Have you talked to anyone about the LM-2? It might have been a firmware issue, the guy who owned it had plugged it into one car in the parking lot and then chucked it into his box of $$$ seldom used tuning toys.

Dont know, call up Klaus, or better yet come to PRI and talk to him at the show.

I have sold a few LM2 with no issues reported from customers...but I havent used one since I have (3) LM1s here and no OBD2 cars to use one on...

i found the elm scan 5 scan tool a while back, http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000RWEL9M?...8QXS5FWK6W3ZT&

Im looking for basic diagnostic uses, but the pcmscan seems to be more usefull if not more visualy friendly. however it costs $100 more..

Has anyone hurd or used the elm scan 5 scan tool? i dont think it has the guage style interface, but dose provide real time speed, rpm, air flow, temp etc...

Post eddit...

The elm scan 5 scan tool that is on the link above is the hardware piece that allows the conection from the car to the laptop. with that purchase you receive a standard software package, that includes the trial version of teh pcmscan. You can get the licensed update for 78$ or something close to that.

Might be cheaper to purchase thru the link above, then just buy the license afterwards.

really? I have used almost all the "tool truck" junk and I have really good luck with this. The rest of the snap on scanners can lick my ass but the "modis" works very well for me :-\

so if the software is free i just need the hardeware for conecting laptop to car.

Is it free in the sense that i can download it from the site, because suposidly some of the features are blocked without the license... Im ordering the elm scan just curious as to what the benifits of purchasing the license there are

Re: USB OBD2 scantools

highroller-my problem with it is it's slow refresh rate, the constant "we'll add that feature at the next update" and never seeing it, and the scope isn't a true scope...it doesn't give you a real scope pattern it gives you a "deciphered" pattern which may or may not be really what is going on plus it's like 5 seconds behind.

oh and...

Fair enough, I can fix a pile of ---- with it but yes it has its limitations for sure. If they made it to good stupid techs couldn't use it then, lol. The refreash rate is different for what your working on to :7

In light of this thread whats better then?

My NI USB-6009 is twice the o-scope of any Pico offering at twice it's price (search studentscope), and it's a barebones DAQ not meant to measure frequency. :8

I'd rather buy 60lbs worth of used 2465B w/ option 10 and power it in-car with a 400W inverter, it'd cost a lot less than the bottom of the line Pico automotive scope even after buying a GPIB card to interface with my bench PC.
