I think your motor blew because of all the cats you were hiding in the engine. they caused the head to warp because of the high cat compression, and they were playing with the spark plugs because they thought they were mice or fireflys.

thats my honest opinion.

maybe the zex cam has too much lift and introduced the valve to the piston?

unlikely.. i went into vtec and no problems.. the vtec lobe has way more lift.. and it was GRINDED DOWN due to weaaring of my lobes and my rocker pads

you used stock pistons i assume?

yeah stock pistons, and 10hp gain would do ---- to stock piston... we turbo our cars remember.. 70whp gain.. stock pistons still ok
