How do I get better resolution in Ubuntu?

It gives me a max size of like 800X600 or some other bullshit. I've got a pretty nice video card and a 19" LCD. I'm not that blind!

Re: ubuntu

sooooo...

other than the usual "m$ iz t3h g4y!!11" ... what's a reason for using something else?

Can I still stream to the 360?
Any sort of directx emulation?
How well does windows app emulation work?
Or should I still dual boot with windows (which would pretty much negate any reason to install linux)?
Will it read my ntfs partition that's only accessible by the windows admin?

:(

less bullshit, no spyware, no viruses, crazy ammounts of free, open source software available through the repositories

I've found ways to stream music and pictures, but not video.

you can run directx 9 on wine, its better to just play games on windows though.

there's a few different ways, you can run VMware and run a completley full version of windows under ubuntu, or you can use WINE and use it to emulate windows to run ---- like photoshop.

----

Guess I'll be installing it.

Ubuntu what you recommend? Another reason I haven't got linux is because of all the ------- distributions of it. I'll mostly be using it for media and interwebs of course, what's the fastest running and easiest to use, thats teh sex with lots of features...i'm guessing you two are biased towards ubuntu

I know nothing on Linux and Ubuntu was easy to install/use. You just need to get used to the terminal commands, since everything isn't point and click.

linux shouldn't be too difficult

Re: ubuntu

If you install it, do it dual boot style. The latest version of ubuntu is fiesty fawn, which does a few things you had to do yourself on previous versions, like auto mounting NTFS drives. Also, ntfs drives are completley read/write now. Terminal is pretty easy, especially apt-get. It might kinda seem difficult at first but switching back to windows and fixing ---- on it gets agervating now because I'm used to be able to seeing why a program isn't functioning and not having to fight with the system to do certine things. Fiesty fawn also has an auto multiverse installer now that does flash/jre/mp3 format/most video codecs and a few other things in the repos now, its very handy compaired to what it was like to have to install all of those capabilities individualy. You might like kubuntu alittle better because you can make it look very windowsish.

Beryl can kind of be a bitch to install, but I walked buk through it so it cant be that bad :P

There's a few other distros that are nice, like fedora, but its a massive download. There might be a fedora live cd now, I'm not to up to date on that distro.

I keep getting frustrated with it. The resolution thing didn't work for me, I can't view embedded video on web pages unless it's flash, the music player leaves much to be desired... but other than that it works well.

xmms, you haev to download the codecs through apt-get on the multiverse or download vlc. with this fistey fawn release its only one package to install all of the audio/video codecs, flash, java and a bunch of other ----.

USS 05-07-2007 09:11 AM

Re: ubuntu

I use VLC, but that still doesn't play embedded video. I'll try that xmms thing. Is there a good audio player where I can make playlists and ----?

jinxy 05-07-2007 09:43 AM

Re: ubuntu

xmms and amarok I think you can make playlists with most of them.

if you're using vlc you need to switch firefox to use that plugin instead of totem. I'm not sure about the resolution thing, you'd need to possibly check the error logs on your x server.

Should help with getting all the software you need installed so you can have inbeded video play in firefox.. I like the automatix program. Makes it one click install to get good stuff like a dvd ripper and encoder.

I created an Unbutu server box here at work Friday and am going to start moving some websites to it soon. Ideally, it'll become a LAMP box. Right now we are using a mismash of databases and scripting languages. bleh!!
