Turbo Timing

Do I still need to buy a turbo timer if I let the car idle for a few minutes before shut down or is a turbo timer better for it?

that's all a timer doesm is keep the car running. if you sit in it and let it run for a minute or 2, you'll be fien without one.

I had a quesiton about this also. Think about this, cars that come stock with turbos don't use turbo timers..

Is there a certian amount of boost run that would deem a timer nessasary? Or maybe it's a "that's why stock turbos go out so often" type a thing?

It's more of a saftey issue. If you let the turbo cool down before you shut it off, weather it be with a turbo timer or a very patient person, it will keep the bearings clean from burnt oil building up on them which in turn causes excesive wear on the turbo bearings. If you can actualy wait in the car every time you arive at your destination and let the turbo cool down, than you don't need a timer. I bet you don't have the patience to sit there all that time!!! ;D

Re:Turbo Timing

turbo timer just uses the VSS to keep the car idling. They're really a scam in my eyes, you're paying $50 for a devise to keep your engine running based on how hard you were stressing your engine. I also don't like the idea of leaving my car 'on' when I leave it... so why not just sit and wait up to 5 minutes for it to cool down?

Re:Turbo Timing

If you are patient enough to wait, more power to ya!! I am not, so I bought one and love it. Depending on what one you buy, and if it is hooked up properly, you can safely leave your car running without the possibility of a theft. My timer has an E-brake switch that turns the car off if the E-brake is released during countdown. I think it is worth every penny. I paid about $90.00 shipped. If you have the money, get one. If you have the patience, don't get one.

Re:Turbo Timing

I wouldnt hook it up to the ebrake switch, some1 could lower the switch to the last setting, with the ebrake still on and the rear wont be locked. I'd wire it to a clutch or door switch ;)

Re:Turbo Timing

Clutch switch would be good.. foot brake switch would be better.

I don't have a clutch switch in my car. I removed it so I could remote start. The "anti-theft" in remote start is that if you drive away in the car, and press on the brake, the engine dies. (It's also got a hood switch, and trunk switch)

But anyway.. foot brake would be an idle place to hook it up.

Re:Turbo Timing

I don't think the bastard that is stealing your car has a clue about turbo timer features. He isn't at the last second going to stop and think,"I should only lower the emergency brake a little bit because it might shut the car off if I lower it all the way since this car has a turbo timer". If he is smart enough to think about that, why wouldn't he be smart enough to just use the e-brake to stop the car if it is hooked up to the brake pedal? Besides, the steering wheel is still locked. If the thief wants your car bad enough, he is going to take it no matter what precaustions you have taken. If your going to worry that much, just take the whole motor in the grocery store with you. He'll have a hell of a time trying to drive away without the motor. :P

Re:Turbo Timing

also if you got a watercooled center section u dont need a turbo timer.. keeps the bearings cool enough so it doesnt cook oil.
i think waiting 2 min after just driving normally is to much.. more like 10 - 20 seconds..

its after a hard run that you would need to cool down for 2 min..
