Trance's all motor disaster

2 Attachment(s)
Hey guy's I remember seeing this happen to 1 other person on here. I think it was Spoon or Spencer, one of those Canadians ;) But anyway I was siting in traffic idling and all of a sudden my idle dropped down and I heard parts falling on the road and then the engine died.
I popped the hood and what did I find?
Attachment 37197

Son of a bitch, am I missing something? Oh here it is, the end of the Zex/Compcams camshaft broke off!!!
Attachment 37198

Looks like it'll be resting again until I can find the parts to fix it. What the hell causes this? Poor casting? Imporper tourque? I drove it all summer long and was preparing to drive it this winter too until now...

Re: Trance's all motor disaster

either the cam just broke or it siezed up from lack of oil pressure :-X

HMTguy 11-19-2005 02:21 PM

Re: Trance's all motor disaster

The problem is all-motor :P

j/k, but I'm sure a bad casting could cause that. Never heard of it happening but anything's possible.

I can't see improper torque causing that. Too loose you might just have the bolt back off and your gear will completely come off the cam. Too tight.... can't think of anything bad that would happen from that other than maybe snapping the bolt when you are tightening or having it be a bitch and a half to take off.

How are your valves?

Re: Trance's all motor disaster

how did that itb d series pull

tranceminister 11-19-2005 02:24 PM

Re: Trance's all motor disaster

I don't know I havn't been able to rip into it yet. I'm actually afraid to!!! Hope I didn't do any other damage. Like I said I was just sitting there idling... The cam gear is now messed up too so it looks like I'm going back to stock parts for a little while.
Oh yeah and the ITB's ripped pretty good in the top end on this little SOHC. I swapped back to the standard Honda intake manifold for the winter but there were definately noticable differences. With the ITB's my low end suffered but the midrange and top end was breathing heavy!!!

Re: Trance's all motor disaster

I could possibly see over tightening causing that, but damn. :o That just shouldn't happen. :S

Re: Trance's all motor disaster

Yeah I thought maybe if I over tightened it it caused it to form stress cracks or something. It's just odd it didn't break before now, I've driven it for a good 5 months.

Re: Trance's all motor disaster

It didn't come directly from Zex I bought it through a distributor on Ebay. Don't know what I should do.

Re: Trance's all motor disaster

doesnt matter its their product. call them up.

MikeJ-2009 11-19-2005 04:01 PM

Re: Trance's all motor disaster

I'm thinking either over torqueing it could somehow do it, but more than that maybe the belt being too tight? But even more of a possibility is that the casting was junk.

If it was a Z6 and you need any parts, let me know. I've got a whole Z6 head that I have absolutely no use for.

tranceminister 11-19-2005 04:03 PM

Re: Trance's all motor disaster

Your the man Stealth. I'm going to contact Zex about it but I want to pull the engine appart and find out if there was any other damage suffered (bent valves etc.) I know my cam gear is junk now.

MikeJ-2009 11-19-2005 04:09 PM

Re: Trance's all motor disaster

I'd say you're pretty fortunate that it happened at idle. I doubt anything got fucked up.

wow, that's really homosexuall. deff. call up zex

Re: Trance's all motor disaster

definitely call them up, and don't say "can you do anything for me" say " my cam broke, blah blah, it was installed correctly, blah blah, so how should I go about sending it back to you" try not to give them the option of saying no we cant do anything. and if you have a way of making up proof that you had it professionally installed, then tell them it was.

Tom-Guy 11-19-2005 04:57 PM

Re: Trance's all motor disaster

Yes, and you can point them to the site www.professionallymadeturbo.com to prove it was professionally installed and you know what you are doing.

Re: Trance's all motor disaster

If this is a common occurance to Zex Cam ( I've Heard of it before too) I would tend to think the threaded hole is no deep enough, and then when torqued down, the bolt bottoms out and causes it to crack.

I've had this on my old motor. Not on the cam, but I used too long of a bolt and it split the aluminum boss right off.

Damn Steve thats sucks man.

contact Joey Copeland

zextech@zex.com

Pull the cam caps and take pics to show no oiling issues.

If you bent valves, it being a off-road product, your fubared,

Re: Trance's all motor disaster

just looked on there website, it just says not califorina legal. not for offroad use only. does it say it on the box for the cams or anything?

Re: Trance's all motor disaster

well he's not in Ca anyways. I'd call them up and see what they can do. Maybe they can compensate you a new came gear too.

Yay... I'll stay away from zex.

Thanks alot guy's, and thank you Mista bone for the contact info. I'll get in touch with him. Thankfully I was idling on a hill so I just had to roll back down. But, I towed it home 3 miles with a rope, haha The homemade way!

Wait, there's other ways to tow a car?

Re: Trance's all motor disaster

Theres a few better way's, but I just happened to have a rope and 1 volunteer Subaru to pull me home!!!

Re: Trance's all motor disaster

Well guy's I guess I can't go after Zex for it breaking. I ripped the valvetrain appart on the head and everything appeared to be well oiled. But, the middle cam cap and journal was all scored up. The others were fine. So I'm wondering if possibly one of the oil gallery's is blocked preventing any oil getting to the middle cam cap/cam journal. Maybe it seized up and thats what caused the end of the camshaft to break.
Here's some pics.
This is the rocker arm assembly. Where I'm pointing is the scored up areas.

This is the cam Journal. it too is all scored up. Notice the oil gallery plug that sends oil through the rocker assembly. I wonder if somewhere it's plugged up.

Any opinions on what I should do? I'm probably going to put the cam back in and plastiguage everything to see if this head is junk now :-\

Re: Trance's all motor disaster

damn

Hard to say wether you can "buff" out the scratches or not, but you may need a new head. Hit me up if you need that Z6 head.
