Default Tomtom GPS: Anyone used it? (5-2-07: verdict is in)

Doesn't seem too bad for the price. Touch screen, looks like it has voice activation, updates via Internet+USB Cable for maps. I've got enough on my Best Buy account to pick one up, and I'd like one for my job anyways. I go house to house to house to house on a daily basis, all around the LA/Pasadena/San Bernardino areas. I think this would be much better than my Thomas guide. Anyone have any input on these?

One of my dad's friends is a truck driver and he tried using one in downtown Chicago and said it was a piece of ----.

On the other hand another friend of mine had one and was able to use it for finding real estate properties in an area they weren't familiar with to marginal success, but it did ---- up a couple of times.

Bottom line: not worth it.

i have a tomtom one, picked it up for $175 on sale. it works very well even tells you your speed in real time (good if you have a fucked up speedo), locations of restaurants and ----. Honestly though, you know your shortcuts around town better than tom tom. but it's convienient cause it can tell you what kind of restaurant/gas station/store is around you.

^ That's what I'd do. It's a helluva lot easier than typing that ---- on the tom tom or telling ti what to do.

I got a few HP iPAQ rx5915s for next to nothing, has tomtom and gps built in. Tried it out, threw them bitches on ebay, don't really see a use. Don't want an extra device to ---- with or have in my view anyway. If it was built into the stereo that'd be cool but otherwise...no thanks

Yeah, our customer base (landscaping and irrigation install/repair) is huge, and it ------s from Hollywood to Rancho Cucamonga. Sometimes we may be at a job for a week or so, but sometimes when we have a lot of small/quick repairs to do, we may visit 6-10 people all around during the day. And fumbling with that Thomas guide on the freeway isn't fun. On a side note, it would be no problem to print out directions from home to one job, but due to possible emergency calls, and mid-day change of plans, I couldn't print out all the directions I would need throughout the day; we never know exactly where we will be headed until we are headed there.

But anyway, I picked one up at Best Buy. I had some money on my credit line from buying my flat panel LCD. I'll figure out how well it works throughout the week, and get back to you guys.
