Thinking of getting ASE certified. Any advice?

So, I hate where my life is and what i'm doing for a living, so i figured hey, lets get certified!

I'm taking my Cisco networking certification, my A+ Computer hardware certification, and my MCSE certifcation.

Also thinking of getting some ASE certifications.
For Automobile/Light Truck, can i just take Engine repair (a1), or in order to get the certiciation do i need A1-A8 and get the full certification?

Any tips? where i can get some study materials, seeing how i'm too poor to afford school?

Lastly, is it even worth it at all?

Edit: What about ICAR?

the only thing i know about ASE certicaftion is that you have to have a ---- load of hours on the clock to make it worth anything. so unless you are gonna spend alot of time under the hood, and on the clock...
I dont know if it would be worth "just to have" type thing.

now my buddy did this...(but he got thrown into jail before the classes started)
he got into the garage at a dealer where there are alot of ASE mech's and time went by and the dealer wanted him to be one also. (he started as the oil/lube guy, shitty job but he had to get his foot into the door)so they said they would put the money up for it and make him sign a contract stating he will work for them for X amount of time or he paid for the class...(but he went to jail, and is now a complete looser getting ass raped every night)

so maybe that would be an option for you. go find a job where there are ASE mechs, and prove yourself, then just start askin....buggin your bosses.

I hope I helped you...

well, while you're on the subject. i went to a private computer school that is suppose to get you MCSE and A+ certified in 4 months and you'll be making $60k a year after that. first let me start off with, I've never been the school type. well afetr spending $500.00 in testing fees, I only got the A+ certification and one of the MCSE
requirements and I didn't learn squat! the school fee was $8,000. and i decided not to pay them so they put it on my credit report and then i had to spend $200.00 to get that negative feedback from that school, removed from my credit report! so, almost $1,000. down the drain. if you want to get MCSE certified, be prepared to read books bigger than the bibble, and also it's best and less expensive to get your MCSE education at a comunity college.

A+ certification sucks.. I spend an entire year studying that ----, and the questions they ask werent even relatively close. Its also BS because some of the questions don't count.. they're for "Future uses" (To see if they should put them on future tests).. So you could get those all right and miss a lot of others, but the ones you got right don't mean ----.. I barely failed, one kid missed by 3 points. Study hard man, read EVERYTHING.. they ask some very specific ass ----.

MCSE, isn't that the microsoft one? I know a few people with an A+ certification, and they are all into computers. It really helps if you like working with computers I guess. And some people tell me the ASE tests are hard, others tell me they're no problem.

ASE = time in the shop. It's not really about ability more than it is experience

about the A+ thing...my brother-in-law, i consider him a wiz at really technical computer ----, codes and all of that....and he has taken that A+ ---- and passed it, but there is some other test he is having alot of problems with. as someone else said, his books are huge thick! to big for me. big books scare me, unless they are full of pictures.

Most of the CompTIA certifications are pretty much a joke. Anyone in the computer industry that can't pass them needs to find another line of work. They charge you $200 a piece for a little piece of paper that says you know fairly basic Hardware/Software/Networking skills. The only place they serve any purpose is if you're trying to get into an IT field and have no experience or degree. To me, that's still a joke because you can get MCP and CCNA both for around $200-300 and they'll take you much further and show you have a much more broad background. The trade off to that is that they're both quite a bit harder than any of the CompTIA stuff.

I have been a ASE master tech for eight years(all certifications) as well as a Wagner ABS master. I dont think it ever did a thing for me. Most employers are looking for on the job experience. Something they can see, not some piece of paper. It mght be diferent in other places, but in Richmond VA all the shop formen talk amongst themselves about the techs. When a new guy gets hired they know from his past work experience what he is all about. Auto mechanic is a good way to make a living, I was making about $50K a year when I quit to start CCA. If I where you I would try to get on at a large used car dealer like CarMax or Drive Time, get on the job training and move up from there. Its about the only "safe job" anymore, I have never seen a good mechanic get layed off or downsized.
