thinking about starting a mail order company

i am working on getting a mail order company started and i am curious what you would like me to carry. quite a bit of the market is covered on this website already so i am going to try to take up the rest of the slack and of course i will hook up the HMT nogs. i will also pay sponsor fees when i acctually start trying to sell

mostly turbo parts that arent already covered on this site. probobly some N/A parts too to put up on ebay or something to pay the bills. if there is anything you have been looking for but none of the sponsors carry, let me know

Have fun with that...people get into business to make money in most instances. Those that try to charge the cheapest price usually end up MIA in a few months time with a bunch of people's money.

AKA...Hotrex, One-Fab, Custom Coach, JohnnyRaceCar...and the list goes on.

Look at the companies here or on other sites that are still here year after year and do your best to mimmick what they have done (it wont be easy) instead of just trying to be the "cheapest guy"

Keeping with the market price on items is good for everyone...when you bring the market down, the good vendors move on to other opportunities where they don't have to compete with Johnny No-Overhead.

Something decent...tokico, koni, kyb etc. Might also want to try and include decent springs with that group as well...minimalist H&R types for beginners, tokico RAK's (yeah right lol) real deal Tein's would be nice too but might be hard to become an "authorized" vendor. Decent parts at decent prices works, cheaping out with chinese turbos is one thing...but suspension should always be high quality. ;)

I wasn't informed JRC ran away with people's money?

Re: thinking about starting a mail order company

thanks for the serious reply Xenocron. its nice to start moving away from the forign -----s. i cant get those, i have tried.

i dont plan to undercut anyone that is already on this site and i do intend to make money, but i am starting out as a side project and plan to keep my day job for quite a while. getting the parts out wont be a problem since i can ship directly from work. i am also not going to be making any of these parts myself so hopefully i wont follow the hotrex road. i have just noticed that the sponsors on this site charge less than everyone else and hopefully i can find some useful products for the HMT people at the same prices. i will check into the shocks and see what i can do and maybe i can get springs from the same people.

Re: thinking about starting a mail order company

The only good idea I can come up with is apparel. HMT shirts, hats, stickers and sweatshirts (real ones this time). You could also carry a full line of Stealthmode one-liner shirts, but royalties would be expected.

Examples:

"I got a HomeMadeTurbo, nigga"
"Slut bitch ------, you just got dusted"
"Hotrex has herpes kid, I serve him with a kosher tip".

....and so on.

It's a guaranteed sale, you'd just have to put some production time into it. I've had the connections for shirts and stickers forever. I just don't have time to handle it.

Hey man, just try and cater to alot of us instead of carryin' HONDA SPECIFIC parts...I know that is the majority here and all, but there are SOME of us Nissan, Toyota, Mitsubishi, etc. etc. guys here tooo....

Scott-EP 06-30-2007 07:45 PM

Re: thinking about starting a mail order company

damn stealthmode, thats a good idea. i do have a screen printing hookup too. im gonna PM you and abaz after i eat, dinners ready

Edit:::

the proper people have been PMed and i thought abuot it and if nobody is already doing it i can offer stickers. if HMT already has a design i can use that or i will make a few and we can vote. then all proceeds(that i get to keep) will go to stocking my shelves with suspension parts for the HMT people. lol

MikeJ-2009 06-30-2007 09:30 PM

Re: thinking about starting a mail order company

HMT specific parts are covered. I can't think of anything more that would be successful. The cost and quality have to match HMT, and I can't think of anything ideal that could be offered. Or, you could just sell couplers, chinese intercoolers, and bullshit like that. You'd be the 5 millionth no-name guy to do that, though, and it's not fun.

Scott-EP 06-30-2007 10:04 PM

Re: thinking about starting a mail order company

yea, i dont want to waste my time. i dont think i could compete with ebay on the chinese ---- anyway.

oh well, even if all i do is sell some shirts for a while and call it quits as long as i break even it will be a good learning experience

Re: thinking about starting a mail order company

I think that one thing thats missing in the performance tuning world is dedication to customer service. we need a sponsor that will cater to all customers no matter what location. I always have a hard time finding people who will ship to a APO address, and if they do the usually tripple charge on shipping. a few people here has been good on the shipping: stealthmode, and tuner toys.
right now I am in the market for a golden eagle block, and can't find anyone that will send it to APO. so that will be a great asset. to your military, canadian, and international customers.
also carry a wide variety of brands

Scott-EP 07-01-2007 08:12 AM

Re: thinking about starting a mail order company

well, i just did a quick search and there are quite a bit of restrictions when shipping to an APO address. so, the extra cost in shipping may be nessicary to cover the extra effort and costs. i cant say for sure till i ship to one though. i can say i dont plan to make any money on shipping, only on the product its self.

BTW: T shirt designs are on the way. after they are HMT approved i will post a poll to pick the top 3 designs

Re: thinking about starting a mail order company

Speaking from experience, you might end up spending more money on shirts than you make. You either need a top of the line printer or be able to replace printer on a regular basis. Also to make profit, you will have to buy in bulk up front.

The quality of an iron on transfer is not as good as a screen printed shirt. You could always use CafePress, but you will not make much money going that route. Cafepress also has some strict copy write regulations. I doubt you will get them to print anything with the word ------ on it.

My boyfriend just made shirts for an Impala race event and there were too many orders to make himself. He ended up using Cafe Press to fill the orders and was barely able to break even. Depending on the shirt or hat, you will also have to edit your design. If it is not your design, you will have to become a Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator expert. People also like variety, so changing it up will make you more. With each change, you have to change the art work. Here is an example of what I am talking about. This is everything he has to offer just for this event. http://www.cafepress.com/lisstlucky7s This is his custom art work, so it was much easier to change it up. He could charge less than Cafepress on these shirts, but he would have burned up a printer on the 100+ shirts that were ordered.

Re: thinking about starting a mail order company

i have a friend that owns a screen printing buisness and he will hook me up with a deal and he would print anything i want on it, but i really dont think i want to put ------ on it. maybe nignog but i doubt that too.

I would rock a Stealthmode shirt :y

Make a shirt that has a poll and the last option is Hotrex has herpes and is checked

the only problem with that is that your friend sells them to you with his mark up and then you have to mark it up to make a profit to sell to HMT. You could make them cheaper and sell them to HMT customers cheaper. In order for that to be worth your while, you would have to buy bulk from your friend. Are you prepared to do that? I thought it was an easy money maker at first too. I would do some homework first. Either that or you will end up doing a massive job and find that for all your trouble, you made less than you would have working at McDonalds. :'(

Re: thinking about starting a mail order company

You guys make this too complicated. Make 4 designs, all of them with cool looking logos, and offer all 4 shirts as a package for $__.__. No polls, no this or that. Customers don't want to do the work for you (designing, deciding what's cool, ect.).

4 cool looking shirts. Cool is subjective, but not difficult to pull off.

But i'm pretty sure "HMT" is not registered by Jeff so he doesnt really own anything but the homemadeturbo.com address.

Assuming that Jeff will give the ok and phil stubs gets a program other than mspaint, this could actually work.
