Re: things that go bump in the night...
my folks old house made a lot of noises at night, if anyone would crash on the couch in the family room they would swear they heard someone walking down the hall and ---- like that.
I laughed at them until one day spent the night down there I noticed how weird and real it seemed.
Look around at your hot water pipes and things like that. Is your house well insulated or are there any drafty areas? Was someone recently up and running water or anything? My old mans house was always worse in the colder winter weather.
My old mans house I tracked it down to hot water pipes that ran the length of the hall under the floor before going to the 2nd story bathrooms. Someone takes a **** in the middle of the night the pipes get a fresh dose of hot water and expand creaking along their mounts (it took time so it wasn't obvious seconds after the water running etc). Then a couple hours later as the pipes cool back off they made the noises like the 'ghost' turned back around and came back.
Houses with PVC water pipes are a lot worse for this, especially if the plumber has never used PVC. But there are other things besides water pipes that can shift especially in an old *** house such as yours.
Check simple ---- like that before you start loosing sleep scared of some spirit pissed off you're in his house.
