whats the best way to test a motor sitting on the floor in my garage with no distributor on it? leak down ?

leak down is about the only thing you can do

you can do compression check too, just apply 12v and gnd to the starter.. (watch for sparks!)

cool thats kinda what i was wondering. im just trying to check the health of the motor .

I would do leak down and bring a battery to do the compression. That is about it. Visual inspection I suppose.

I've seen a guy that had a engine and interior harness connected to a d series on a stand with an ECU sitting next to it, and he started it. heh.

If the tranny are out, just hold the starter against the flywheel and crank it.

or you can do what junk yards do ... just put a impact gone on the harmonic balancer and sompression check it that way :y

on easy thing is to pull the valve cover off and check out the valvetrain to see if it is clean or burnt, sludge, etc.
you can pull the plugs also to check them.
