TC Install pics and wrap up

The car finally got finished up today, Monday. Everything went pretty well. There was a lot of down time due to the lack of tools and supplies. The meet was at Fnan's parents, so all tools had to be supplied by members. Most of us lived at least 30mins away.

Had to make the fittings work so we just needed some inventive ideas, this one was colin's:

I don't see the point in that clusterfuck of vacuum line? Anyways, good job. Any video?

Inline resistors suck.

It takes just as long to solder up an OEM resistor box to a spare OEM plug, since you don't have to ---- around in tight underhood enclosure. Looks cleaner, less likely to fail due to strain/vibration, and the OEM resistors are 6.7-6.8 ohm not 10 so you get more motive force @ the injector.

But, I'm ---- like that.

Run 7-9 degrees high cam timing at 10 psi, and lock it there up until you hit knock limit on pump gas.

I am a proponent of the resistor box myself. I didn't set this thing up though. To each their own.

The Y8 has a huge injector wire cover so it will be unseen when he cleans it up.

It's kinda funny. I'll mount an IC with zipties, but messy wiring makes me want to fistfight. I'm a nutjob.

Me too. Wiring was kinda a mess, but it worked out.

Hey man, I only had a few T's and short lengths of hose to use, so I had to use my imagination.

Hehe, no worries - me and Cray cleaned it up.

I'm going to spend this week cleaning up little things about the install, like grinding/painting the piping, installing the Walbro 255lph pump, etc. etc...

But it runs pretty well! No oil/coolant leaks, good oil pressure, no CELs, and it pulls pretty well for being at 5 psi, untuned and running a restrictive 2.25" exhaust (temporary). I'm going to throw on the 3" KTeller exhaust and get it tuned here soon!

I'll try and get my map on my laptop, so I can email it to ya. Maybe you could tell me what you think about the timing setup on it? It seems to run/pull pretty well, I've been trying not to redline it, but it's hard to resist :6

I'm still trying to figure out whether the Y8 timing issue is worth the trouble, or if I should switch to a Z6 head and run that on a built Y8 block.

Tom-Guy 04-18-2006 03:22 PM

Re: TC Install pics and wrap up

There is no Y8 timing issue. There are ignorant asstards with issues who feed Y8 too much timing. They also feed Z6 too much timing, but to a lesser degree. You know you have a timing issue when D16 purges into the overflow tank when boosting. If it doesn't purge, but logged coolant temps don't drop down much and still spike high after a good hard pull, you probably need to yank more timing. It's to the point I can calc ballpark ignition timing based on coolant temp sensor feedback; there is no reason you ------s can't do the same.

You can download the dyno tuna D16Y8 .bin on xenocron's repository. The low cam ignition is ignorant as hell and too retarded; the high cam ignition under boost is rock solid. Have fun.

I am facing the same problem on finding a reliable place to start on a d16y8 tune. is that the map u ended up with after that marathon tune you did on the y8?

Do what I did, over the aluminum screening I used for filter I put about 5 layers of pantyhose. Adds a little extra filtration for those small particles and doesn't affect flow. Just ask your girl for a pair, or one stocking. It's all you need ;)

It's a basemap. It's not supposed to be reliable - that's what tuning is for.

You can deduce MBT if you keep an eye on coolant temperature logs. It's assinine, no one ever mentions it that's I've seen, but I watched it with Steve's car on the dyno, and I replicated it with both the White Car (built H22) and the Black Car (built 2.0/VTEC) in the last two weeks.

The only thing marathon about that whole deal is how much of a fuckup both I and Steve are. It takes me nine hours to make a four and a half hour trip between getting halfway there and realising I forgot the 2.5 bar MAP, and driving 45 minutes past the interstate exit I needed because I was tired. Steve is very married, and his wife keeps him on a leash... so the time we were allowed to work on the car was very abbreviated - we never got the car running well enough to go to the dyno with... in fact, we were 45 minutes late for our appointment because we were trying to get the 2.5 bar running halfassed. Actual dyno "marathon" was an hour and 15 minutes or so.

I go back to Raleigh the weekend of 4/30-5/1 and we have a 4 pm dyno appointment. Steve has told his wife he's working both days, so I have a fourteen or so hour window of opportunity to get the car street tuned on the 2.5 bar before we roll to the dyno at 4 pm and shoot for 300-325 whp. Steve kinda wants 350, but that's the ragged edge of the 550's he's running.
