Re: Talk to me about Porsche 944s
i like the way the second gens handle, they feel very nice. there pretty popular for scca, and i hear that it is relatively easy to swap small blocks into them and keep a perfect 50/50 weight distribution

Re: Talk to me about Porsche 944s
I had an 83 Porsche 944 for a few months. The only thing I would say that is decent about it is the suspension. Motor is weak (no power) but it can beat an Escort ZX2 by like 3 lengths, yeah its that fast! I had a throttle rotor, intake and cat back exhaust. Don't waste your time on any of them, even the turbos. Like he said it is an economy car. It will break with few upgrades. HAHA weak sauce.

Re: Talk to me about Porsche 944s
RX7's never came with 3 rotors in Japan, just the cosmos.
I have an 85 and a 95 rx7 and love them both although they are heavily modified and far from stock.
My buddy just picked up a 944 turbo. I have ridden in it a couple times and I'm impressed for what it is. They seem to be designed well. Nice external oil cooler, divorced wastegate that has a separate exhaust and y's back in to the system downstream, brake ducts integrated in the front bumper, etc.

Mate, that's exactly what I'm doing!!!!!!!
Porsche 944 isn't the most powerful but Porsche wouldn't change to a V6 or V8 as they have strong principals. Once they made their mind up, that was it. How about a flat 6 hanging out the back of a car behind the rear axle. Never catch on, eh? ;o)
The 944 is more about straight line speed as it's a perfectly balanced chassis with the transmission all in the back on the rear axle.
I've bought my basic one as a non runner for little and have thrown all the crap out of it. There's a company in the US doing US V8 conversions but I didn't want to do it as a heavy small block could really upset the cars balance.
I'm going for the Lexus 1UZFE 4 litre 32 valve all alloy engine to be different and also because it has a 6 bolt main crank.
Going to use a blow through holley and have a Vortech V2 in my garage ready to go.
A bit low on money at the moment but should get there. The Lexus engine is wider than a SBC but should squeeze in.
Oh by the way, Porsches are a money pit if you want to keep everything working in it. So I decided to throw anything out that wasn't bolted down. Along with the engine has gone all the interior. Will put perspex glass in, glass fibre wings and bonnet. Should save about 250ibs hopefully. Once running there will be nothing on it to go wrong other than my own engineering attempts! ;o)
A mate of mine here in the UK has done his own conversion putting the alloy Rover (Range Rover) V8 in (ex buick lump). With a simple set up of a webber carb and careful attention to the chassis using decent bushes and suspension the tired old 944 is now a frightening 948!
Let me know what you think.
Cheers
Mark

Fun daily driver? Yes
Race car? No
Sounds like the OP wants more of a race car he can drive on the street, tipping the scale to RWD. My origional comment was aimed at that SAAB thing or whatever it was, which in my opinion would be a better car if it were RWD or AWD.
