Swapping xbox 360 dvd drives
i have a couple 360s sitting around with the RROD and then one that doesn't have the rings of death but the dvd drive won't recognize anything is in it.
I swapped a drive from one of the other systems in it but when I put in COD4 it came up and said you need to run this on a xbox 360 to use it. Is there a firmware update or something I'm missing to make this work?

you sure you have the same brand drive as stock? i know there were at least 3 different types/brands. ya there is some kind of key/firmaware deal you have to do. you might bed able to swap the laser assembly, although i would search around first

Jorsher is right. You need to extract the key from the original drive's firmware and then reflash that into a new firmware file for whatever drive you're swapping it with.
It doesn't matter if you're swapping drive brands, it should still work.

Cool, good to hear for sure because I've been too lazy to check into it. I just knew you had to have a drive with matching keys, and knew people sell the standalone drives online so there had to be a way.
Nice.
