Re: stupid vista

I know Vista-bashing seems to be pretty common, but I haven't had much experience with it. The only ones I've had was fixing my dad's Vista laptop (was his first computer, not a good starter OS) and using some owned by friends. Has the service pack improved it any?

I might throw it on my next computer just because eventually I'll need to upgrade to it and should probably learn what has changed, but at the same time I'm very comfortable and satisfied with XP. It does everything I want and I know how to get to everything I want without having to go through convoluted menus and settings.

Downgrade to XP.

I've been running Vista SP1 for a while now, works perfectly. You just can't run it on an old ass system and expect it to perform that well.

Yeah I've seen that.

I'm looking forward to Windows 7. Hopefully they won't make the same mistakes as they did with Vista.

I think a majority of the problems stem from hardware incompatibility as well as user-error and being "lost" with such a different OS. All the preceding operating systems went through the same "phase" and ultimately ended up being "great" (with the exception of ME).

I know when XP came out, everyone was bitching, and I stuck with 98 for a year or two. Now everyone is bitching about Vista and sticking with XP. Probably in a few years when everyone has become comfortable with Vista, and Windows 7 comes out, they'll be bitching about Windows 7 and sticking to Vista.

XP is great though :)

I do not approve of Microsoft selling Vista for 99 cents to any laptop manufacturer who agrees not to make the laptop XP compatible. There is a 2-3 year span of laptop production where 95% of th market is comprised of useless gear I wouldn't wipe my ass with.

Most tuning programs won't work on it. Software support is NOT there which is the #1 reason nobody in the Fortune 500 is converting over to it, even though SP1 cleared up 98% of the basic stability issues. The only thing Vista currently does correctly is surf the web and play games... I like doing both but it goddamn fucks me anytime I try to do something useful.

Yes, Vista is the wave of the future. 2 year minimum before it's refined enough for me to bother with a Vista/XP dual boot. If they polish it like they did XP it will eventually be just as stable, and it will be just as worthwhile, but that moment in time is not now.

Vista also has a kickass media center :)

Yea it's bloated, but so is any new OS compared to the older counterpart. Just disabling services that are unnecessary to you will speed things up a good bit.

Yah, I'm going to play with both Vista and XP Media Center when I get a DIY projector up and running. The PC will be a 3.2 Ghz P4, but sliiightly short on RAM, so I expect the XP to fly better regardless of what I do.

HMTguy 07-31-2008 01:21 PM

Re: stupid vista

Vista has all the features of XP media center plus more, if you're trying to see which one is better it's VMC all the way.

Short on RAM+Vista=No

Yeah, I'm with you on that. I think I used Windows 98 until around 2003-2004, when I felt XP was stable enough for a permanent spot on my harddrive.

XP also used to be called bloated, but once PC specs caught up, it didn't seem bloated anymore. I run WinXP Pro SP3 on my antiquated AMD 2400 and 1gb of ram, and it runs smooth as better. LOADS better than my mother's "new" computer with a 2.66ghz celeron (yes, I know celeron is the ---- of the crop) and 512mb of ram running XP Home.

I'm sure Vista is bloated, but not sure it's bloated to the degree it's made out to be. Most people experience it on storebought computers that come pre-loaded with soooooooooo much garbage, it's ridiculous. I've tried talking my mother into letting me format and install a fresh copy of XP without the Dell Garbage Pack 2.0, but she adamantly believes it's slow because of the software I put on it (uTorrent and FireFox).

boot into safe mode. create new user with admin rights. Reboot pc and login with new login you just created use said rights to change passwords

Vista security thwarted by safe mode. gotta love it.

sunboost 07-31-2008 06:40 PM

Re: stupid vista

yeah vista is smarter than that, cant do the safe mode think like in xp, it still asks you for your password. :X

i got it all worked out.

im just used to xp, thats why i personally dont like vista, and everything is just off, and it asks permission and warns you about every damn thing. i guess that isnt always bad but its annoying. whatever, average user might not mind i suppose.

Re: stupid vista

Vista NEEDS RAM and with it being so cheap right now, why not?

My sons machine, 64 bit Vista only had 1 GB (2x512mb) and was SLOW. Just bringing up the task manager took 15 seconds, system was running at about 60% at idle.

For his birthday I bought him 4 GB (2x2 GB) of Cosair ram from Newegg. ------- Vista FLYS now.

Oh yeah, $67 after $20 rebate.

ur right vist gets ---- it dosen't diserve because people buy $400 computers at circuit city and they are shitty but instead of blaming the computer they blame vista
i have had my computer since january and althought it's only got a amd x2 5600+ processor and 3gb ddr2 800mhz ram and a nvidia gforce 9600gt 512mb video card it runs just fine it's not uber fast but it gets the job done
and on cod4 i get 55-60fps and 63-70fps on oblivian (and when my friend plays wow on it he gets like 160fps on maxed out settings)

I do feel their pain though. Microsoft should not be forcing Vista on machines that "pass" the requirements but can barely run it with all features turned off. They actually got involved in a lawsuit for saying machines were "Vista Capable" that could indeed run it, but very poorly.

I love how they push it out and then go Ok no more XP for Corp. and thus begins the chain. Once business buys in then Home will soon follow, most folks are gonna want what they know and if they work with it for 8 hours a day they are gonna know Vista.

Cant wait till it finaly happens and folks wise up and start considering Ubunto and other freesource ---- as a viable option.

If I were a corporation, I'd risk penalties and use pirated copies of xp before putting the foundation of my company on vista.

That is why they actually made XP stable, my friend. The boys in Redmond didn't like the little deal where Redhat stock went up 1500% in the first month it was released.

Re: stupid vista

XP got stable quick compared to vista and XP WAS stable if you compare the issues. XP is not gold by any means but its issues I think at teh time werent as bad as Vista.

Meh you gotta point either way.

"Sure sure sure?" It's pissing me off...

Ubuntu is good overall, but it's a pain in the ass to get it to recognize my screen resolutions and even a bigger PITA to work with my broadcom wireless card. XP runs sufficiently, and can do everything I need it to do, so I'll use it as my main OS.

For the vista "do you allow" crap, someone mentioned above on the thread how to get rid of the messages.

You only have to set your resolution in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file... I had to do it for my 22" because the max I had was 1440x900.

Re: stupid vista

You can disable all that popup ---- pretty easily... Disable UAC in the accounts setup.

But flash back to like 1999. Everyone I knew was running win98 and refused to run win2k for gaming. Then they moved to win2k because it was more stable and they eventually refused to run xp. Now what? They are all running xp and refuse to run vista. But I admit, vista costs maybe 400 in hardware upgrades just to run smoothly lol.. None of the other OS's were that bad

Don't think anyone will disagree with that. The others had their flaws, but eventually got them worked out. WinME had flaws from the start and never fixed them.

It's amazing I used to see WinXP and bloated ---- and now it seems streamlined and simple. I really hated the new look too, was too round and bubbly. I still hate the "new" start menu and control panel and switch it all back to classic view.

Anyone know how well Vista would run on an amd 2400 with 1gb of ram? Last time I installed it was the leaked beta which of course ran like crap. I really need to familiarize myself with vista because it seems foreign to me.

Ubuntu performs GREAT. It just doesn't have the software/compatibility XP has, and is different from the Windows I've grown up with. I know there's wine, but why go through the trouble for minimal performance increases?
