If you really want to get into detail about the origins of the "emo" music wave then you'd start with Morrissey and Depeche Mode. Creed is all about christ and salvation through religion, (another blind faith excersize); Emo also takes it's roots in the Velvet Underground's sobbern lyrics as well as Lou Reed's solo projects with their rants about the herion comedowns he was so famous for. It can also be traced back into the Goth music in the 70's and 80's. Ground zero for the current "Emo-core" (the crap that really sucks) started during the "post-hardcore" movement in the 80's when the two genre's began fusing. At first it was just a merger of emo-indie, then to emo-punk, then the effervescent emo-core; with it's chugging riffs and predictable octave displacements, as well as "insightful" lyrics of juvenile teenage angst. Such brilliance.

It's a shame really, the original emo bands were actually quite good.
