starter street bike?
I'm looking at getting a street bike. Does anyone here have a ninja? I'm looking for a smaller one so let me know what you guys have driven. I dont want anything above a 300cc since I have a speeding problem.
|
Re: starter street bike?
getting a 300cc bike is retarded.
get an older 600 and be done with it. you don't want to have to hold the throttle half open to cruise at 60mph, or have to twist the throttle almost to wot to accelerate, its gay, and hurts your wrist if you have to do it constantly |

36hp is less than my 3 wheeler

Re: starter street bike?
anything less than a 600 comes with a bananna seat and pink streamers on the handle bars. Standard Equip.
|
Re: starter street bike?
Cut the bullshit and buy a GSXR1000R. Last bike you need. I'm 230 and that thing pointed itself at the sky more often than not!

Re: starter street bike?
my buddy bought a 250 ninja brand new a couple of weeks ago. It lasted 1 month before he traded it in for an R6 you want something with at least 500cc's

Re: starter street bike?
If you buy a 250 you can sell it for exactly what you paid. You are only out the tax and registration. I know its honda-tech logic but it is a decent bike to learn on. You can rail on it and be pretty safe. You dont need to worry about not being able to handle the power. Just dont expect to keep it more than a summer so dont go buying a brand new one or anything.

Re: starter street bike?
I just got rid of my bike about a year ago, older 600's are nice for a first rocket. I had a Yamaha FZR600 with a 2001 R6 FI 600 motor. It ran 11.5 easy, cruised nice and got the front tire up nice without clutching it. Love them highchair wheelies too!
|
Re: starter street bike?
let me say this one more time, if you are learning to ride, get a bike with some type of powerband, so you know what to expect on bigger ones.
|
Re: starter street bike?
get something with a vtwin, doesn't even have to be crusierish i4 bikes are gay to ride around town.

Re: starter street bike?
02 GSX-R is a great starter bike and you get get a used one fairly cheap. If not that grab up ninja around the same year they are very comfortable bike's, more so than the gsx-r. ---- gitting a 80's 300cc ninja there worthless and you'll find yourself board with it 1 week after you get it. Plus there slow as ---- i can burn them off the line in my N/A auto hatch. So don't waste your money.

BTW I've seen more experienced riders on smaller bikes at the track (Not the drag strip) lay waste to newer 600's. Seeing a lil 500 rip around a corner leaving a newer 600 in the dust is a sight to see..... granted the newer 600 sorta caught up in the straight... followed by early/scared breaking and the 500 pulling away even more. Food for thought... and think about it this way... get a cheaper bike now, and good gear. Then next season if you feel necessary get a bigger bike. |
Re: starter street bike?
deffinatly get a 600, you wont be satisfied with anything less when you get the hang of riding and trust me your get it pretty quick...i had a 1992 cbr 600f2 and it treated me good, you can find those usually anywhere from $1500-$3000 and the f3s for a lil more....but if you wanna get a good bike that will be your last get a gixxer...i'm looking to get a gixxer 750 in the near future. but the 600 will have plenty of balls

Re: starter street bike?
handle power through turns??? who hops on a bike for the first time and goes around dragging his knee while romping on the throttle? they'll crash any bike they get on.
someone could buy a turbo hayabusa and never touch the throttle and it would be just like riding a heavy bike with no power. here is a heads up, if you havent ridden before, don't twist your wrist all the way back |

x2. Buy a used smaller bike and EASILY resell for the same price and then possibly more. Re: starter street bike?
if you have a speeding problem/ think you might get hurt on a 600, ill tell ya right now u can get hurt bad and speed on a 250 so might as wel get a 600.
ive gotten hurt pretty bad on a 50cc dirt bike and moped my 1st "real" bike was a cbr600 F3, there great bikes and u can find em cheap |
Re: starter street bike?
1000CC + or bust

Re: starter street bike?
My first bike was a 1983 KZ 550 ltd. A nice comfy cruiser. Inline 4. Still fast enough to get you into trouble but easy to learn on. Plus when you drop it you won't really care! I ran that bike through the Jersey Pine barrens once. Still have the cooling fins branded into my left leg, lol. 450 lbs bike in the sand at night was a bad idea. Extremely entertaining though!
My suggestion. Buy a 80's bike. 500-650 cc's. I like I-4's because they have more of a top end. Twins are torquey. Learn on the 80's bike. If the bike is still in one piece after you are confident at riding, then sell it. Then buy something bigger. If you wrecked the ---- outta your "learner" bike. Buy another 80's bike to practice on. No sense in buying a new gsx-r or ninja just to drop it and ---- it up. Ride all of your friends bikes to find out what style suits you. I would suggest learning how to ride first. My bike right now is a 83 GPZ 550. Ton's of fun. I love old school bikes. Still not bored with it. Runs a mid twelve in the quarter. top speed of about 135 or something. Speedo only goes to 85 mph, lol. |
Re: starter street bike?
I'll post pics of my little rice burner soon. Yes I am new to sports bikes, I've only driven honda dirt bikes.

Re: starter street bike?
Whatever you get I HIGHLY suggest taking the MSF course. I know in IL its 20 bucks.. which is refundable or you can donate it. You learn (or for many dirtbike riders relearn) some valuable skills there and it should give you a discount on insurance.

Also, check out the Kawasaki EX500, Suzuki GS500, or even the Suzuki SV650. All good bikes for beginners. A side note about these bikes: after you get some experience under your belt, these bikes are easy to re-sell and you can usually get close to what you paid for provided you don't have any whoopsies. |

Re: starter street bike?
I have my first bike right now which is a intruder vs800, its a vtwin bike and I really like the low end trq. I just put a corbin gunfighter seat on it and it feels great. They are also pretty lightweight and is quick enough for me right now. I had thought about getting a sport bike but I don't know if I'd like the seating position on them. If I do get a sport bike next it will probually be either a buell or a triumph.

Re: starter street bike?

I ended up getting a cheap ninja knock-off sport bike. :S It cost about 1100 including shipping to my door and interchanges with honda on alot of parts. Its the old 2006 model, but ---- atleast its new. So if I deciede I dont like sport bikes it wont be to big of a hit.
Hyosung? But that wouldn't interchange a damn thing with a Honda. |

3 Attachment(s)
heres my bike I got it for $1100 too, and it only has 4k on it, some dude let it sit in his garage for 4yrs all it needed was the carbs cleaned, new battery and oil changed. I've added zbars, grips, mirrors, and a corbin seat so far.
