I asked the same question on many forums.
Like what kind of diffirence in power can one expect runing 10 psi on a SOHC 8 valver when compared to a SOHC 16 valver.
Never got even an estimate of a figure :(

Later I was told the 8 valvers handle turbo better cause their springs are stiffer and also suffer less from valve float. This I personally dont belive.

You should also tell them to replace their muffler bearing. Tell them also that they should run some sand in the intake to increase compression to make more powaaaahahhhhhxzzzzz

run the engine you have till it blows...then when you have to get a new engine then u decide. d series engines are just as tough as the b's if built right.

Re: sohc or dohc opinions

Actually I kind of wish I had a d-series to boost.

I'm going boost on my stock LS. My first car.

Both can be reliable, but a b-series will probably take you farther as far as power goes. Depends what your doing.

I just plan to have my LS nicely street tuned, so I can still be quick but not beat on it too much, and have it last a while. Don't want ---- to go, but I have a feeling the rings will go first. i hope not! At least not for a while.

But just boost what you have 8) ;D

ahh the good ol depate d vs b. Its been borken down a million times over. Lets get real here. what do you consider USABLE street hp? 300-350 right? thats about it for traction goes. A D is well capable of making excess of 300whp on half the price of a B. If this thing is going to be a dyno queen or a trailer ----- fine...B series. Ask yourself whats your main purpose. Chances are mostyl street...D series it is! Pin it or even block guard it, forge it and be done with it. Whipety do so your tiny little D series ONLy makes 350whp but uhhh doh! that guy with the 500whp fully built GSR will be doing the same thing you are at that point. Wheel spinning like a bitch! Not too mention theres more room and it weighs less :)

When it comes to the street and usable, practical hp: D > B

Re: sohc or dohc opinions

yea but you can reliably hit some serious numbers on stock b-series internals. basically it will cost you the same amount to either build up a d right or swap in a b (ive done both). personally im glad i went b-series since i have more room to expand if i feel like it. it all depends what you do with your car/motor

Re: sohc or dohc opinions

understood. i do respect the b series. but, i've only got 68k on my d and is it really sensible to pop in a jdm with, and i qoute, "~35k-50K" miles on it? i'm just gonna wait and beat the ---- out of the d when i boost and drop the crvtec in there when my enlistment in the army runs up in '06. her nickname is gonna be tina and i'm gonna get an ike sticker----------->"what?! you're trying to help ike? ike don't need no help" O0
