So you think your honda is fast?

Probably not as fast as mine....
cbr600 fuel injected ;D
this is a prototype.. everything will be going into a 02 italkart shifter chassis once all the bugs are worked out.

hope to fire this one up this week and vids to follow

Yes we will need vids.

Cool, I've always planned on doing a similar project the day I have a garage to work in...

haha cool. my friend used to race carts and had a briggs and stratton 5 hp motor worked over to closer to 100 hp when all is said and done. fun ----.

My buick originally made 205 hp, now it makes over 1400 now that I worked it over. You guys should try it out sometime.

Re: So you think your honda is fast?

any front brakes?

crxdan 10-15-2007 04:55 AM

Re: So you think your honda is fast?

No front brakes on this one. I am the kind of fabricator that will fab something once, then look at it and say if I could do it all over again... i could make it 10x better. so thats why i butchered up a cheap chassis.
https://images.craigslist.org/010100...b40b00f0ca.jpg
Once the "testing" is done (ie.. clutch drops, see whats breaking, see what needs improvment) then the motor goes into this chassis.. which has front brakes. everythign will be tig welded and cromoly tube. no shortcuts...
Then the real fun begins... once its all built to perfection...
Its difficult to cut up an expensive chassis, put the motor in, and be happy with the final result without having some knowledge first.
I wont be going over 60mph with the "prototype" model anywas

Re: So you think your honda is fast?

Lol @ 5hp to 100hp. If you would dyno that thing, I'm pretty sure at the max it's 30hp... that's what Ricky Ritter gets out of his Briggs Animals after doing some "working over." BTW Ritter is tech certified in kart racing, that means that if one of his motors is in a winning kart it doesn't need to be taken apart and inspected by officials. He's a local guy (Winchester) I've talked to about building a Briggs flathead twin for my race mower, and he says at the max 5hp's get 30ish.

Its looking great, deffinatly post up some vid of that thing tearin' around.

ive always wanted to build something like that...maybe a little bigger but with a liquid cooled sled engine/tranny

looks badass!!

50hp from a 100lb motor ftw.

Re: So you think your honda is fast?

haha damn i never really thought about it. i know its pretty high horsepower cuz the thing rips ridiculously fast but i never actually thought about it. ass dyno says close to 100 but my ass is retarted so flame on.

Re: So you think your honda is fast?

Looks like a fun toy. What's the weight difference between the cart and the motorcycle as it was?

TorganFM 10-15-2007 10:25 PM

Re: So you think your honda is fast?

Considering most karts are about 300lbs with driver, that is with a proper light driver (sub 150), so a typical kart is 150ish. They're light enough to pick up and move easily with 2 people. Add 75lbs for the bike motor and I'd say about 375-400lbs for a kart and small driver. What's a typical 600cc bike weigh with rider?

RotaryGeek 10-15-2007 10:39 PM

Re: So you think your honda is fast?

i think the 06 cbr 600 weighs like 5-600 iirc. the 07-08 1000's weigh less which makes no sense to me cuz there bigger in all aspects. but anyway it goes your gunna have some fun on that little Bitch.

TorganFM 10-15-2007 10:42 PM

Re: So you think your honda is fast?

Power to weight for the win >:D ----, my 300-400lb empty racing mower does 40mph with a stock 20hp opposed twin, it just takes a little bit to get up there. Shifter karts fly.

Hope you know what kind of pre-heat you need for your chromoly. I don't like hearing about people getting seriously hurt.

Some guy lost his arm in a dragster because they didn't weld his roll cage together properly and it cracked right in the brittle haz. We had to study it in college and find the mode of failure.

crxdan 10-16-2007 01:42 PM

Re: So you think your honda is fast?

It will be tig welded for the most part. And this isnt a 2000hp dragster, its a 600cc motor with maybe 60ft lbs of torque. not alot of weight/stress going on the frame.
Its also not going to be a 160mph rocketship either. will be geared accordingly.

TorganFM 10-16-2007 04:09 PM

Re: So you think your honda is fast?

Those things still pull 3g's. It's a lot of force, even if it's not so much weight.

ososlohatch 10-16-2007 04:36 PM

Re: So you think your honda is fast?

if you can tig and get the right gauge of metal itll hold fine

But dude....to scale, you either have a champ car or a gp2 car....

with no harness/seatbelt or cage

be safe yo

crxdan 10-17-2007 04:48 AM

Re: So you think your honda is fast?

safety first. I might put a recaro with 5 point harness if need be.
I am very respectful of horsepower and know when it can be used. The only vid of a bike powered kart ive seen crashing is some fools who were driving with no helmet, at night, in a small parking lot.. probably after a few beers.
The new chassis also has awesome brakes which makes me feel a bit more confident. And of course all driving will be done in a wide open paved area with no other cars.

cbr600 is around 430lbs. so that kart should be roughly as fast as a bike, but those tiny ass tires are gonna make you have to be creative with your gearing

New CBR is only 341lb dry :S

Even worse, it's supposed to have 118hp... Really puts things into perspective on how shitty a 2100lb car with 106hp is... :(

Its actually probably better, lots of tiring smoking toqrue but no top speed to seriously injure yourself.
Considering shifter kart chassis are built to do 120-140mph.. i would be hapy is this thing topped out at 100mph.
I read up some specs that a shifter kart chassis with a 43hp 125 engine will do 0-100-0 in 10 seconds, and does 0100 in 6 seconds. That means 100-0 is around 4 seconds.
And 3gs of cornering force...
I better b ring a bucket with me when the new kart is built and I push it to the limits cuz ill probably hurl

crxdan 10-18-2007 05:10 AM

Re: So you think your honda is fast?

Oh and I stumbled upon this which makes me feel a littl better about the build..
http://sickcycles.com/users/ninja-kart/
And to those who have seen the gixxerkart video this kart will NOT be comparble to it. the gixxerkart motor has about 75 ft lbs of torque, whereas the cbr only has about 45.
The gixxer kart is an absolute deathtrap and should be put only into the hands of its creator.
Although power output is similar.. I expect my kart to be a bit more forgiving... hence why i chose a 600

Re: So you think your honda is fast?

Formula SAE mostly use 600cc bike engines, google it if you want some inspirations of design.

Rules are available on the SAE website (I don't recall the exact address). Frame / structure safety are addressed in that document (material, gauges...), you could use this info if relevant to you.

Good luck with you project.

LOL

What the ---- are you talking about.

A kart can stop faster than you think.
0-100-0 for a shifter kart is 10 seconds liek i stated before. And lock up a 4 wheel disc brake system on a kart? You have obviously never driven one before.
