Re: so i went to uti open house
I had a friend that went to UTI in CA. The guy had built plenty of motors, and knew his stuff. So he goes to the program, and gets a job at a Chevy dealership as a tech. He said he really didn't even "have to" take the course. (as Jeff Frank could probably tell you), and then they started ------- him on the work hours, giving all the good (worth hours wise) jobs to the senior guys, and giving him the bullshit.
Now he's a salesman at a different dealership. He's good with cars, but the guy has no personality and no communication skills, on top of now working next to Gustavo Chavez that just got to this country last week. Anyway, that's the story of the only guy I know that went to the program. Use it how you wish. |
Re: so i went to uti open house
I only know of one person who has went through the UTI program, he was one of my best friends in highschool, he went to arizona for the 2yr program. Anyhow, the plan was when he came back from school he was going to be a tech at our dealership with me. Well he came back to WA and oddly he got a job offer from another dealership but not as a technican... insted he got a job as a Service Writter, he is doing very well, makes alot more money than I do. He works at a Lexus dealership, doesnt even get his hands dirty, but I'm sure he has to handle lots of heat. I would never want that job.
I honestly think going to a automotive school is a bit of a waste. Sure you learn alot, but alot of these big automotive schools are just feeding you bullshit info, technicans dont make lots of money like they say they do. I just could never justify spending money to learn on how to work on cars. ----, you spend enough money just buying tools. Maybe I just feel this way because I was pretty lucky on how I got started. In-house training is where its at. You learn just about everything. I suggest if someone is interested in being a tech to check out local dealerships and talk to the service manager to see if they offer any programs. |
Re: so i went to uti open house
from what i've heard, the only difference between UTI and comunity college is the time. CC will take you about 2 years to get all ur ASE ----, and UTI takes like 6-22 weeks or somethin like that
my mom mainly wants me to go just so i can get the experience of living on my own :4 |
Re: so i went to uti open house
do any of you think it helps to have UTI behind your name when applying or would simply being ASE cert with some CC classes behind you be just as well?? The AT courses I've taken at my CC are pretty in depth and taught very well and they can get you your certs too.
|
Re: so i went to uti open house
thats out near philly, i think nonvtec lives out that way, and xenocron aint too far either.

Re: so i went to uti open house
skinnye, if you couldn't tell from my story, my friend got stiffed out of all the "easy jobs with good credit hours" by the senior techs. I would imagine your first years would be this way anywhere you went.

Re: so i went to uti open house
definately thats the way it is, but I feel I don't know enough and I want to go to school to learn more, plus I really love honda, also I'm kinda tipsy right now
|
Re: so i went to uti open house
seeing all the young guys at my work that have gone through UTI, its not worth it. soem of the guys come to us with perfect grades at school but dont know what a strut is :1
|
Re: so i went to uti open house
i have a feeling schools value depends alot on where you go. Yeah i had some automotive knowledge but driveability was way outa my grasp, for me community college automotive program has been really good. after the fact i feel is up to you, tool boxs have wheels on them for a reason.

Re: so i went to uti open house

Re: so i went to uti open house
i dont know i wont to go they say if u go u can go back and take a the class u took for free as mean times as u wont so i dont know i was wondering what yall think i dont know my parents will be paying so go or no
|
Re: so i went to uti open house
im not really concerned with how much they teach you, because (not trying to sound ignorant) but I would say I'm pretty knowledgable about cars in general at my school. Mostly honda's. I still learn stuff everyday, but me and a couple other seniors get asked questions all day when the teacher isn't around.
so that's why the shorter course really appeals to me about UTI. and I want to go through BMW or Audi, just because the cars are cool and expensive to work on >:D |
Re: so i went to uti open house
so u going there
go or not go |
Re: so i went to uti open house
I wouldn't do anything untill you have an associates, minimum. Something about spending $ and time makes people change their mind ;)

Re: so i went to uti open house

and there are always hours to be made in dealerships, there are good jobs and bad jobs. 75% of our work is warranty, you just need to know how to write good storys to get paid ;) |
Re: so i went to uti open house
I have one friend who just got finished with his program a few months ago.
When he first went they fed him all this ---- about how easy it was to find a job after the program etc. and how you could make all this money. Well, he finally found a job as a lube tech making like $8 an hour and changing oil all day long. Doesn't seem like he's getting any return on that investment. Whatever you do. Stay in school. It really sounds like you need it! |

Re: so i went to uti open house
I went to UTI and then the Mercedes Benz Elite program. Was it easy to get a job? Yes. Was it worth the money? I don't think so. Was it fun? yes. I went to the campus in Illinois before all these other campuses were open. I didn't know much of anything about cars before I started at UTI. When I was done with UTI, I still didn't really know what I was doing. I needed more experience. I learned soooooo much when I actually started working.
I worked for Mercedes for 3.5 years and got the shits of it. I realized I didn't want to work on cars for the rest of my life. I also got sick of alot of other bullshit. Ex. Cleaning snow off of cars while you are punched on the job. (not getting paid) Doing jobs that you don't get paid for. Bullshit warranty work that doesn't pay ----. Getting stuck in traffic and losing money. (If you have to test drive a car and the test drive pays 12 mins and you don't get back for 35 mins well then tough ----, you only get paid 12 mins) its fun working for free When there is no work you don't get paid. There is alot more that I can bitch about. The senior guys or favorites got most of the good jobs. Flat-rate really sucks when you get shitty jobs. It can be awesome when you get good jobs. And like Jeff said, you need to learn to right a good story to get paid. I know that being an automotive tech was not the job for me. There are much easier jobs that pay better. Its alot of work for not that much money. And the flat-rate times just kept going down. It got harder and harder to make money. I love working on cars, but not for a living. I know I wouldn't want to be doing that ---- when I'm older(40-50 yrs.old). My back and knees would be shot. I love not having to deal with the bullshit. I'm going to college now. If you have any specific questions pm me. |
Re: so i went to uti open house
i know they say that audi after uti and the audi program u will be payed 15 a hour
|
Re: so i went to uti open house
I get payed a salary every two weeks, I have to get atleast 20hrs of work time in a week, after those 20hours I make $34 hr comission, but once again there is alot of bs, I just started working at this shop again and noticed on the computer that a brake job I did was'nt under my name, or some spark plugs I did on a supercharge linclon so there was more ---- in the way, to say the least I'm rather pissed.

Re: so i went to uti open house
The people that I see doing well are those that start at a dealership doing stupid ---- while they are going to school for auto stuff. They get in good with the dealership and in a couple years they are a legit mechanic, and already have a potential employer.
