thinkin about it. to get about 40 miles here up the main highway, it will take you about 2 hours. I dont wanna sit on that bike for 2 hours, to get to a riding destination, then ride how we wanna ride, then ride all the way back.....mmmmmm.....no. the 400 would be a ton of fun.

The only bike I'd ever ride would be a custom chopper, I'm scared of sports bikes because I know if I ever get one one there will be no holding me back from doing something stupid on it.

I own a 01 katana 600 and it is a pig, almost 100 pounds more than a cbr. This was my first streetbike, I've always had dirt bikes. Don't buy something new to learn on, get an older bike or learn on a dirt bike.

As for a good beginner bike I wouldn't recommend a Katana, its plenty fast but the handling sucks and its hard as hell to pick up if you drop it. Look into a motorcycle safety course in your area, they will teach you everything you need to know about street riding.

If I could go back a few years I would have just bought an older cbr or yzf 600

If insurance is a concern though Katanas are listed as Sport/Touring and are alot cheaper to insure compared to a GsxR 600

the SV650 is what I'd recomend. I learned on a 1987 Honda Hurricane, never dropped that heavy piece of ----. After 10.5months of that bike I went out and got a 03 GSXR750. Any bike is only as dangerous as the nut behind the handlebars, and any bike should be respected, regardless of displacement. Take the MSF course if you haven't done so; out of 6 guys I ride with, I'm the only one who has taken the course, and coincidentally, I am the only one to have not gone down.... yet. If you are mature( :1 ) you could get a newer R6, GSXR600 CBR600 as a first bike, they are fairly tame in the sub 10000 rpm range.

In the end, pick the bike that you;
A. feel most comfortable riding, and is within your ability to learn on.
B. can afford, which includes getting gear w/ bike purchase and make sure you consider insurance etc...
C. Take the MSF course, it is money well spent
