i really don`t see the point of LEARNING on a new bike because you ARE going to drop/flip/scrape/damage it.

thinkin about it. to get about 40 miles here up the main highway, it will take you about 2 hours. I dont wanna sit on that bike for 2 hours, to get to a riding destination, then ride how we wanna ride, then ride all the way back.....mmmmmm.....no. the 400 would be a ton of fun.

The only bike I'd ever ride would be a custom chopper, I'm scared of sports bikes because I know if I ever get one one there will be no holding me back from doing something stupid on it.

Re: should i get a motorcycle

I own a 01 katana 600 and it is a pig, almost 100 pounds more than a cbr. This was my first streetbike, I've always had dirt bikes. Don't buy something new to learn on, get an older bike or learn on a dirt bike.

As for a good beginner bike I wouldn't recommend a Katana, its plenty fast but the handling sucks and its hard as hell to pick up if you drop it. Look into a motorcycle safety course in your area, they will teach you everything you need to know about street riding.

If I could go back a few years I would have just bought an older cbr or yzf 600

If insurance is a concern though Katanas are listed as Sport/Touring and are alot cheaper to insure compared to a GsxR 600

Re: should i get a motorcycle

the SV650 is what I'd recomend. I learned on a 1987 Honda Hurricane, never dropped that heavy piece of ----. After 10.5months of that bike I went out and got a 03 GSXR750. Any bike is only as dangerous as the nut behind the handlebars, and any bike should be respected, regardless of displacement. Take the MSF course if you haven't done so; out of 6 guys I ride with, I'm the only one who has taken the course, and coincidentally, I am the only one to have not gone down.... yet. If you are mature( :1 ) you could get a newer R6, GSXR600 CBR600 as a first bike, they are fairly tame in the sub 10000 rpm range.

In the end, pick the bike that you;
A. feel most comfortable riding, and is within your ability to learn on.
B. can afford, which includes getting gear w/ bike purchase and make sure you consider insurance etc...
C. Take the MSF course, it is money well spent

I don't even have to read any responses, you're not gonna get one just like how you're not gonna do a turbo v8

Re: should i get a motorcycle

frank, that gsx 400 is a rolling pile of low tech ----. youll be sick of it and ready for a liter bike in 2 weeks.

buy something you wont outgrow and just be smart about it.

those upgrads that slant eye was telling you about is nothing more than a slip on pipe, probably readjusted the suspension and from the looks of it stainless brided brake lines, whoop ti ------ do.

that biek is so slow, it doesnt even need brakes and could proably be registered as a moped.

Re: should i get a motorcycle

i had a buddy start out on an R1 and i got a lot that started out on a 600cc bike...and a few that started on a 250 or 500...both that started out on a 250 or 500 say they wasted their money on the bike cause they grew outa the bike really fast....all my buddies that ride say go with atleast a 600...it really doesn't matter what you start out on as long as you ride at the level that you are at...in other words don't try to go out and top out the bike if its your first time on a crotch rocket...i started out on a 600 and i've been fine and i havn't had a lot of experience riding any kind of bike.....but a lot of my buddies say get a bike that you don't care if you drop it cuase usually begginers drop their bikes....thats why i got a 1992 cbr 600 f2...juss respect the bike and it will treat you good

lol i learned on my friend 06 cbr600rr and i dropped it at four miles and hour. i don't ride bikes anymore. he was extremely mad, but my left arm ways more than him so he didn't do anything. besides, his dad has a body shop at his house and they fixed it and painted it this ugly ass dark red orange color. worst color ever.

im still undecided if i should get a motorcycle. i have payments on a 06 silverado. i earn less then 12k a year but all my money is spent on my cars and sometimes my girl. my civic got tottaled and i have around $2000 in turbo ecu ----. so i want to get another civic and build up the engine but i live with my parents and we only have a 2 car garage with 4 cars right now. so im thinking im just going to store all my turbo stuff and buy a civic when i move into my own house in 2 years or so.

If it was my decision I'd sell that chunk of truck silverado, buy a civic, and use the extra money I'm saving each month to move out of my mom's house. If you prefer to stay with your parents then use the money for a bike and it's ridiculous insurance.

Oh yeah, but it's YOUR decision.

My brother has a Honda Rebel for sale for like $1200. It's a total piece of ---- though, it's been dropped more times than I can count because he used to rent it out to people who wanted to get their liscense and become a cliche Harley biker...but couldn't pass the test on the bigass harley they intend to ride. :1

Bikes = real speed 8)
To get back to your question , get a bike if you don't mind dying.
In many bike crashes its not even your fault - its some idiot driver that kills you :-\
Both my grand parents were killed on their bikes, and in both cases it was the fault of the other party.
Theres absolutely nothing wrong with owning a bike .. I'd stick to a car tho ;)

As ButSex said, just get a liter bike and dont do any stupid ---- on it for a while and you'll be fine... I got an R1 and the only riding experience i've had before was riding a bicycle. Droped it once while going 2 miles an hour... no biggie. I didn't even get hurt. But other than that i already put 1300 miles on it and no problem... If it was a 600cc i would probably already be tired of it...

Not trying to rip on you, but the people with your history in starting out on a liter bike is definitely in the minority. Not to mention, very few people, myself included can take full advantage of the abilities of the sport bikes made these days.

The thing about bikes is pick one that you are most comfortable with; and take the advice of anyone telling you to get a 600cc 1000cc 250cc bike etc... with a large grain of salt. I've been riding since 02 so I'm not necessarily a veteran, but I'm not a newb either, and I'm glad I started with the pos 600cc bike I had, and from my personal experience, guys who started off on 600cc bikes and worked their way up tend to produce a faster lap time than ones who started off on the 1000cc bikes ;)

i dont think hotrex was talking to tuname when he said get a 1 liter bike..

he was talking to frank.. and frank is mature enough (from what i gather) to not do anything retarded..

on the otherhand.. with tuname.. just buy an old ass 80cc dirt bike and start it off REAL slow :1

do 50cc a year.

Re: should i get a motorcycle

do not buy a 250. i know from personal experience that it is to small and youll be bord in a month. secound you probly weigh to much for it despite what it says. third the only thing a bike has to protect it self is speed and manuverability. 250 has no speed. i got a used 500 for my first bike and was fine. still a litle small and i weigh 180lbs. and my final coment will be that i sold it because i was scared i was going to kill my self, me being 18 at the time. moved on to going fast in hondas ;D

t3t5 07-17-2006 01:15 AM

Re: should i get a motorcycle

i weigh 140 but what i have read on a sport bike forum is to start off on a 250 because noobs hit potholes and probably pull on the throttle and go flying as if u had a 250 u wouldnt have as much power to throw u off. but i do want to get a yamaha y7f600r. but im not sure yet if i can sell my truck ill get another civic soon. theres no use in having 2 cars for 1 person. but ill be riding the bike around the block alot until i have the hang of it to shift and go around corners since i dont have much motorcycle skills at all.
