What does Neo VVL stand for?
Nissan Ecology Orientated Variable Valve Lift and Timing
The VE (Neo VVL) series of engines is Nissan's answer to Honda's VTEC. The two systems are nearly identical. They use the same concept of multiple cam lobes to provide a low rpm cam ideal for torque and a high rpm cam optimized for hp. The only difference in the Nissan system is that the intake and exhaust cams are triggered indepedently for a flatter, more consistent power band. You can read more about the VTEC system here.
How many different VE motors are there?
There are five (5) VE motors.
SR16VE - 173hp 5 speed Manual 97-2001
SR16VE N1 - 197hp 5 speed Manual 97-98
SR20VE - 187hp CVT 6 speed Auto 97-2001
SR20VE - 204hp 6 speed Manual 2001-Present
SR20VET - 276hp AWD Turbo 2002-Present
How much power does the VE have?
SR16VE - 173hp @ 7800rpm / 119lb torque @ 7200rpm
SR16VE N1 - 197hp @ 7800rpm / 134lb torque @ 7600rpm
SR20VE - 187hp @ 7000rpm / 145lb torque @ 6000rpm
SR20VET - 276hp @ 6400rpm / 228lb torque @ 3200rpm
How much do they cost?
SR16VE - $1000-$1600
SR16VE N1 - $3000+ good luck finding one*
SR20VE - $1000-$2500
SR20VET - unknown
*Only 500 of these engines are thought to have been produced.
**These are average prices based on availability and engine condition. Actual prices may vary.
What are the origins of these motors?
SR16VE - 1.6L VVL motor found in the Nissan Sunny Lucino VZ-R, Sunny GT and Pulsar VZ-R.
SR16VE N1 - 1.6L VVL motor found in the Nissan Pulsar VZ-R N1 and Pulsar VZ-R N1 SSS.
SR20VE - 2.0L VVL motor found in the Nissan Primera (Infiniti G20 bodystyle), Bluebird, Wingroad, and Autobacs Garaiya.
SR20VET - 2.0L turbocharged VVL motor found in the Nissan X-Trail SUV, and Trailrunner Concept Car.

Sinister, it's a ------- 1.6, it sucks wet soggy goat *****.
Just get an SR20DE engine out of any USDM Nissan/Infiniti (beware oil pan changes between Sentra and G20) and bolt turbo ---- to it. The NA engines hold 400 to the wheels without flinching.

Re: sentra sr20 swap
It's almost like the DSM disease for FWD SR20 setups though. Engine can provide it but the tranny doesn't always deliver. Tranny cases have a notorious history of cracking from anything 300 and above. It's not even a issue of just certain years. Pretty much all fwd sr20 trannies have that problem. JGY offer like 3 different ways of just strengthening the cases if that says something about it. Cyro treating, shot peening and welding the case.
No doubt that like getting a B16 to a B18C. I'd opt for the SR20VE if I decided to install one into the Z since they make adapter plates to bolt the fwd sr20 engine onto the stock Z tranny.

I already have the gay16de under the hood, I figured another 1.6 wouldn't be so bad... sr20de can hold 400 horse huh... I think I'd be happy with 200

Re: sentra sr20 swap
Yeah, the majority of the FWD trans are weak. B15/P11 trans does alright, very cheap to cobble LSD from one of the cheaper models over. Biggest problem is wheelhop; as long as there is no wheelhop the trans usually holds together for a minute. There is a tendency on the non-B15/P11 boxes to lose 3-4 gearset after exposure to power for a while.
