Retirement/ Stock Market
So, being an active employess of the bank, of course my 401(k) is somewhat tied up in Wachovia stock.. Optional, of course! If any of you watch the market, you'll know that around the time we fired our CEO, stock was at $7/ share. At that time, I decided to move 90% of my balance in my retiremetn acct into Wachovia stock... So, this is where it is now.. Good move??
http://www.nyse.com/about/listed/lcddata.html?ticker=WB Daily, it's up and down, but I've noticed a steady incline the past couple weeks. |

Re: Retirement/ Stock Market
My 401K lost about 8% this year... I don't see things going much better next year either.
What do others contribute to their 401K and what does your employer match, if any? I contribute 5% of my paycheck + 4% match from my employer. |

Re: Retirement/ Stock Market
Comcast matches 100% of what you contribute and so far it's been going up.
They limit how much they will match, but I think it's way more than I get paid anyway. |
Re: Retirement/ Stock Market
i put in 3%, my employer matches that.
my ---- doubled in the last year, ---- yeah |

Funny a buddy of mine were saying the best thing to do is to have a couple of gold bars chillin for security. Gold=the most solid investment in history Actually most metals are these days. |

Precious metals are the best investment. ----...probably a majority of metals are a better investment. |

^ True dat. Some crack head jacked my old a6 block and intake manifold. I'm sure it went to the scrap yard as he left normal parts that were worth money behind.

Is that graph a ratio of the level of the dow to the price of gold. That would show that the dow is rising faster than gold right?
Also I would not have too much money invested in the company you work for. What happens if they take a ----, you have no job and your investment goes to ----. Also the financials are fucked right now, also you shouldn't have more than like 1/4 of your investments in a single stock. ps I don't know ---- so don't listen to me |
Re: Retirement/ Stock Market
Dmoto - money's "value" is fake. The more they print, the higher the debt, the less it's worth.
Gold has actual worth, although its worth is somewhat fake too. Our money used to be backed with precious metal in Ft Knox. Money can be manufactured all day, gold can't. |
Re: Retirement/ Stock Market
Now show me which individual stocks will increase at that, or better, rate. And I want you to sink everything you own into them. You must have slept through history class the day they covered what caused the Great Depression. :3 |

You must have slept through history class the day they covered what caused the Great Depression. :3 Thats why in todays world, when we go into recession the Fed increases the money supply, helps spur economic growth, but if you let it get out of hand and put too much money into the economy it causes inflation and the devaluation of the currency. Thus where we are at now, trying to balance it all. But, you weren't asking me. |
Re: Retirement/ Stock Market
there are quite a few ways to make money with investments, you can make money by betting on the dollar going down... it going up... etc... but gold is about the most worthless investment you can make.
yes it is pretty safe, but i just dont see it... say there is a traumatic economic change in the us/world and you have some gold bars sitting in your back yard, what are you going to do with them? gold hardly outpaces inflation if I remember right... yes there have been times where its much more valueable and much less... so you can make money on it in the short term... but that is about it. you can normally make 10%+ annually in the stock market if you are average... if you are good you can make 15%+ you cannot beat that.. |
Re: Retirement/ Stock Market
You can buy $10,000 worth of gold today and tomorrow it will be worth $10,000. You can buy $10,000 worth of stock in a company and not be worth jack ---- tomorrow. Which one sounds like a more sound long term investment?

why would you buy stocks if you wanted to just hold the current value.... ----. at some point gold isnt worth ---- too... its proven in the last 100+ years that a 401k is VERY benneficial to 99.9% of people... i mean ----... do the math and see for yourself. diverse investments are no more risky than gold... they just make you a lot more money... |

If you have $100k layin around and want to secure your retirement, invest in gold, or platinum. These are damn near guaranteed. As for me, I can take my $$$ in my 401(k) and flip it daily. Granted, I took a loss w/ some ---- earlier this year, but I'm in a profit margin now.. No more loss! I check my investments and stocks daily. If you want to make fast money, I assure you it takes patience and effort.. I mean to watch ----. You can't throw your $$ somewhere adn expect it to double overnight. (Yes, I know there are some that do.. But what are the chances?) |

granted nickel is somewhat of a newcomer to the market it can only increase in value w/ almost every auto manufacturer building hybrids now. invest now and then once lithium starts to take off pull out what you have made and then buy massive amounts of gold |

I'm hearing a lot of tripe from people who live in trailers in this thread. :l gold has ups/downs but it a helluva lot more stable than "the market." I guess investing in the market alone instead of individual stocks is also safe, but gold's material value will always be higher than the paper value of currency... |

If you notice a large decline, chances are high someone else knew it was going to happen beforehand, and by time you get your funds moved...they're already worthless. |
