REENLISTING

I got out of the army in march this year after serving for 8 years as a tracked vehicle mechanic.
I thought I would forget it and get out and never look back, but I missed it so.

I called the reserve recruiter and I will be reenlisting as a reserve light wheeled vehicle mechanic. I said if I ever get back in I will do 20, so 2o here I come 8 years active, and 12 years reserve, retire and collect a big check, plus I can get a 15000 bonus for wheeled vehicle mechanic, I am already trained so all I have to do is signed the contract.
should I continue to serve?

If it makes you happy then do it man.

Re: REENLISTING

I don't think we can make that call for you. Thats a life choice you have to make bro. If it was me i wish i would have served but i got married and things never just turned out. Most of my family has and a few of them were long term they have said they have no regrets. Best of luck to you. I think whatever you choice you will be happy with it.

Re: REENLISTING

If its your thing. You never lived normal life for any real period of time, nor did you ever have a baller job, so if you do not have the motivation or the need to do something exciting with your life, continue working on dune buggy's and then collect check.

I would want to at least try doing something for myslef before signig my life away.

Re: REENLISTING

I dont know man technically I dont know anything else but army. its my life. I tried to do the civilian thing, but it aint me. the freedom is great, the money is great, and the time I get to spend at home, is super great, but a part of me is missing without being a soldier, and when I was in I could not wait to get out, but now I am out, its not the same. I got married while I was still in I met my wife here so she knows its a part of me.

but the reserve is nothing but a weekend soldier so its no big deal, until bush activates us to fight, but normally its one weekend a month, while keeping you civilian job. but if war calls you have to get activated.

I say go for it. You seem to enjoy it and it agrees with you. Good luck.

Re: REENLISTING

DUDE.. if your doing it for the money.. dont do it.. because you can get any other job..

but if your doing it cause u actually miss it/want to serve your country.. then go for it...

also.. what does your wife think of it? dont you have kids??

before.. i assume u didnt have kids.. but now you do.. so you might want to think about them before you go...

Re: REENLISTING

I say go for it if you miss it. It's more of a secure job knowing it's gonna be there unlike a civilian job and you only have 12 more years till you can retire. I say do it since you've almost got it half done and if you enjoy it then those 12 years won't be bad if you miss it this much. And knowing is half the battle! YO JOE!

Re: REENLISTING

My buddy re-enlisted in the Marines to be in the infantry and he is now in Maryland waiting to see if doctors can re-attach his leg.
RPG in Iraq changed his life forever.

Re: REENLISTING

I aint doing it for the money. yes I have 2 kids, my wife dont mind.
I dont think I can fit in in the civilian world, I speak different, I dress different, and operate different, after I got out I tried to grow a beard, but I could not keep it I shaved it off, I tried to grow dreadlocks, but I could not because I am used to a high and tight. I just dont fit in, I wake up too early, always calling everyone sarge, my boss sir, he dont like it. I feel out of place. so I am army.

If you really think you can't do without the army life, do it.

Have you ever thought about joining the police force?

where I live in the states would be more dangerous than Iraq.(miami dade county)
plus I now live in Germany with my wife, so its either army, or work for army.

Do it man. Everyone tells me that once you get out you dont know what to do with your life.
Reserves, it would be like your still there, but your really not kinda deal.

12 more years and your done. Are you GS now?

Re: REENLISTING

You gotta think about your family first. whats the likely hood of you getting deployed? And you could probably be near your home town or where ever you want to live. As long as there's a Res. station.

If not, use that GI bill and go to school.

I got out of the marines in nov. of 05. Thought about reenlisting, but being in an infantry unit, we where always getting deployed and it wasnt fair to be leaving my wife and son all the time. And I didnt want to do a lat move.

So I got out. Start looking for jobs that are equivalent to what you are doing now.

if I remeber right, he already has a degree which he obtained, and he has a decent GS job in Germany, so hes got things going for him already. He just needs the military back in his life, since thats about all he knows. I totally understand where hes comming from...

It sounds like your situation is a perfect fit for the reserves. I know the feeling of not fitting in and such. I'm on campus now getting my degree/ROTC/waiting on a commissioning and its hard to see how everyone else lives.

I personally like the way hotrex lives. I mean, hes got it made. mom pays his utilities, he has no health insurance, he comes and goes as he pleases, he has his own little place in moms basement, man...whatta life. it must be great to not have a care in the world. :1

Re: REENLISTING

Hey man if the military makes you happy, reinlist. Sometimes i feel like i want out, but i think its all about your job. I love what i do. And i don't know what i would do in the civilian world sense i joined when i was 17 and left for 18. Now i just fly around all day in P3's hunting subs and blowing up stuff. Life in the civilian world would be weird if all you know is military.

so it'll be like ur in inactive reserve or something right? my former marine cousin is doin that. when they need him to go he'll go. but he says he'll go after the other reserves.. he's got a fam, the reason why he didnt re-enlist to active duty.. he told me other stuff im still confused about. anyways i think it'd be ok to re-enlist. its just weekends right, and they'd less likey activate you anytime soon i hope.. :-\ if none of this dont make sense, my bad im tired..

i got out in june, and life is different. i don't think that i would go back unless they asked, but that's me. staying in/going back might be a good idea as long as you like it. putting up with the BS was the biggest thing for me, but after that it's easy.... big decision, good luck....

yeah its innactive, reserve. 1 weekend a month. thing. I will be doing it as a light wheeled vehicle mechanic. hummers, 5 ton trucks etc. when I was active a was a bradley systems mechanic. I had to work on everything, but my specialty was bradley turrets. I love the job but I hated the job. I was always in a infantry unit, wherever they go I go, whatever they do I do, and still have to do my job at the same time, without getting the same benefits or recognition as they do, I got shot at as many times as they do and shoot back as much as they did. but I was just another pog. in their eyes. no bonus, no award. I hated it but I love it. got tired of the politics. reenlistment time came up and I said to reup guy I want to reclass, he said no you are a carreer soldier cant help you so I said bye.
6 months later. missed that ----. most of my friends and civilian co-workers are reserve, so I said give me the number I called the recruiter he showed me the demands, and I say 15000 for being a wheeled mechanic. give me the application. so it benefits me in 2 ways. the need to be in the military, and some money to feed my hobby.
