Recomendations for a quiet muffler
I built a 3" exhaust for my car. It's 3" wide open, resonator, no catalytic converter and has a Magnaflow muffler. It's loud as balls. I need a quiet muffler. Like the quietest 3" muffler ever made. Don't care if it hurts power I can't use the power around here with all the police as it's too ------- loud. 99' miata running naturally aspirated but will be turbo'd in a couple weeks. :y So what's the quietest muffler available? I've read Dynomax super turbo mufflers are quiet. Any others that might be quieter? I'm tempted to put the factory muffler back on cause it was pretty quiet but that would probably add a lot of back pressure after I get this GT3271 installed.

Re: Recomendations for a quiet muffler
walker 3" truck muffler
summit 3" oval muffler |
Re: Recomendations for a quiet muffler
don't listen to that bullshit both those mufflers are ------- loud ricer cans
if you want a quiet good flowing muffler get a 3" turbo muffler they are like $30 bucks my b18b made 225hp 240tq at the wheels at 10psi with that muffler |
Re: Recomendations for a quiet muffler
What 3" turbo muffler you talking about random-strike?
Here's a link to the dynomax muffler I was talking about. Things 90 bucks though... http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku Or how about this SummitRacing 3" turbo muffler? http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku |

Re: Recomendations for a quiet muffler
i would personally recommend your mom as a good muffler. i know she muffles most of my internal combustion's - beyatch.
|
Re: Recomendations for a quiet muffler
I put dual thrush mufflers on a old t-bird I did a 302 swap on few years back. Once they broke in they weren't that quiet. And from what I see, thrust don't make a 3" turbo muffler, 2.5" is the bigest they list.
Jesus, you ever tried or heard a summit turbo muffler? |
Re: Recomendations for a quiet muffler
i'm running a summit turbo muffler on my D. The volume is reasonable, though somewhat louder than stock, but that is to be expected. Gives me headaches when cruising on the highway for extended periods of time but i'm not complaining. Being used to an open DP for months, this baby purrs.
|
Re: Recomendations for a quiet muffler
I'm running a summit "turbo" 2.5" on my turbo miata. It's quiet as all get out. Probably a bit TOO much backpressure but I've got a cut-out for when I need it.
|
Re: Recomendations for a quiet muffler
Just throw your turbo on. It should quiet down the exhaust a good amount.
|
Re: Recomendations for a quiet muffler
I've recommended a Dynomax welded Ultraflo to anyone who asked for the last 7 years. They are affordable, good build quality, flow as good as anything else but make less noise, and generally don't suck.
In the last 7 years exactly zero people have purchased one because it isn't a chrome ricecannon with a 5" tip. |
Re: Recomendations for a quiet muffler
Thrush turbo.
I've put on on everything I own. The T-100 has one and it sounds good. |
Re: Recomendations for a quiet muffler
I <3 my 3" Magnaflow painted flat black tucked under the bumper with a 3" downturn (also painted black)
|
Re: Recomendations for a quiet muffler
enikolayev- my manalflow is the same way. Gives me headaches on anything more than a 15 minute drive. When I had the stock exhaust I could raw hide the hell out of the car and nobody noticed cause it was pretty quiet, and slow.
Slos13- You got any vids or sound clips? I know the turbo will quiet it down some, though I don't know how much. Thing is I'm building a sleeper, so I want it quiet. Stock 2.5" exhaust tip will be going on whenever I change out mufflers. As it sits now it's got a 3" pipe out the back. Doesn't look stock at all. Joseph Davis- Wouldn't the dynomax turbo muffler be quieter? I'm sure a baffled muffler flows better but quiet is more important to me. Sound police here are a bitch. They write you a ticket if they think your ---- might be loud. |
Re: Recomendations for a quiet muffler
My exhaust is full 3" with a gutted 3" cat for looks. Turbo makes it really quiet. I mean it's still loud because it's a ricer Honda, but it's quieter than it would be NA with the exhaust. My turbo probably muffles more than my muffler.

A turbo - the-o-rectally - operates as a third of a muffler. In reality, sometimes it acts as a muffler and other times it doesn't do anything. Your turbo manifold dictates most of this, and the length vs diameter of your exhaust dictates the rest. If you put it together and it's too loud I would recommend sticking a glasspack in the B-pipe as a resonator and if it's still loud try to add or remove a couple inches from the end of the exhaust. Also, big tips amplify noise, avoid that ----. Some people swear by downturns but if they aren't properly placed you just reflect noise off the ground and into your undercarriage so that your personal ride is loud. Be careful, I've been in some cars that were fairly quiet inside, but you could hear from behind from a mile away. This is a great exhaust, IMO, but it is NOT stealth. Thermal R&D 3" for DC chassis Integra is great for this, the car is pretty quiet but everyone behind you experiences the sound and fury. |
Re: Recomendations for a quiet muffler
Yeah, I've read "The Scientific Design of Exhaust and Intake Systems" a while back so I know a bit about exhaust stuff. But of course it's only part theory, and part real world experience. When I built my exhaust I kept it 3" everywhere w/ no tip and minimized bends.
The magnaflow is a straight through perforated tube w/ ---- around it to absorb sound. It works, but doesn't work enough. Also, I got a glass pack as a resonator already. Actually have 3 in a row after the down pipe, but didn't say that earlier to avoid ridicule... They help cut out the high frequencies and raspyness. I'll probably try the largest body'd 3" summit turbo muffler first as it's only like 30 bucks. Hopefully that will get the sound down more than this magnaflow. The magnaflow is fine at idle and low speed cruise, but when you open the throttle or cruise at highway speeds it's like there is no muffler. EDIT: I'm running a 4:1 header right now but I'll be running a cast iron manifold when I turbo it. FWIW.. |
Re: Recomendations for a quiet muffler
Let me guess, you are in or past your mid 20s and that bumblebee tuna exhaust isn't the image or driving experience you care for. :P
You, sir, need to go back to a stock size muffler and one of Hi-Profile's DIY world's fastest e-cutouts. Or just use a $25 LS1 TB with a $7 T3 wastegate actuator so it comes open under boost. |
Re: Recomendations for a quiet muffler
Yeah, i don't like loud ---- or anything flashy. I try to preserve the miatas cute gay image as much as possible. I may indeed try putting the stock muffler on and a cutout. Would be perfect for me really. And cheap too. What size are LS1 TB's? I like the idea of a 7 dollar wastegate controlling the TB. That would be sick.
|
Re: Recomendations for a quiet muffler
They come in a variety of sizes you can order from the factory, but 70mm is common which is right at 3". Mine was $33 after shipping on ebay. The wastegate actuator was about $11 after shipping from our very own Boosted_Stinkynuts. Good stuff. :6
|
Re: Recomendations for a quiet muffler
Had another idea while thinking about all this. Rather than reference the wastegate to intake manifold pressure, I could reference to pressure before the muffler. So whenever the muffler is causing a few PSI restriction, the waste gate opens the TB. But on second thoughts that wastegate might not handles the heat all too well. But I could deal with that in some way. Dunno, but this cutout/wastegate combination is probably my best bet in one form or another.

Re: Recomendations for a quiet muffler
I run a Moroso spiral flow on my car. I have a 2.5" downpipe, with 3" piping back from there, no resonator, no cat. The muffler is 3" in and 3" out. My car isn't EXTREMELY loud IMO, except at WOT but that is mostly because of the open dump wastegate. I always tell ppl if it's too loud, you're too old....but I HATE raspy sounding fart cans as well, so I see where you're coming from.
|
Re: Recomendations for a quiet muffler
I've got straight 3" pipe off my turbo straight back to a 3" thrush
loud as ---- outside, sounds great, not too loud inside very low not recommended if you need "the quietest" |
Re: Recomendations for a quiet muffler
get that 20 dollar summit racing turbo muffler. I have that on my vitara setup with 3 inch crush piping no cat, or resonator and still made 280whp on 15psi. Didnt hurt power at all. Pretty damn quiet too.

Re: Recomendations for a quiet muffler
hey pat, i have a summit turbo 3" single in/out on my lincoln with no cats, resonators or anything else and my ---- is still pretty quite

Re: Recomendations for a quiet muffler
hands down the best muffler ive ever used/heard on a turbo car was the vibrant stealth mufflers. quiet and nice sounding. sure its 110 for the muffler but it blow a faggot magnaflow/dynomax/summit/thrush out of the water.

3 inch Ebay turbo back, no cat, shitty resonator that comes with the exhaust, and a 2.5inch Ultraflow is quiet and sounds delicious.
