project: AWD turbo Audi A4 (picture update 3) - hole in the #3

I ran across an 2001 Audi A4 1.8 turbo AWD car for 1,500, but unknown engine problems. It only looks like the car has a vaccum leak and a blown turbo. The car doesnt miss, it just doesnt really have any power and will blow blue smoke sometimes. The car drives pretty good, its just a rough idle and now power.

I'll post some pictures up soon, the car is freaking mint interior and mint exterior!

Updated

I replaced the turbo and the coil packs. It ran good, but when I did a full throttle run on stock boost it blew. I have 0 compression on #3... and oil all over the back of the engine. No oil out the exhaust? I guess I have a hole in my block, or one really busted up headgasket. I guess I could have a hole in the block but the car isnt that noisy.

I'm going to try and fill #3 with air to see where the air leaks out at...

update 2

To get to the stinking engine I had to pull the front end of the car off. All I want to do is pull the head off the motor and look at the valves. I'm going to have to keep the car after putting all this work in to it. I might as re-ring the pistons while its apart. I will never buy an audi after messing with this car. (unless its free or close to it)

Check your PMs.

so its a pretty non-reliable car? I guess I'll just flip it then.

i think those are the cars that motors got mad sludge in the motor... oil looks like mud in the head/turbo etc... ill bet thats what you find... motor/turbo swap and your set... stock motor + GT35R i mean ;)

2001 was the best year for the B5 they can be reliable. if you can find parts to fix it at a good deal, it's worth keeping. look for a K04 turbo to upgrade(audi tt), but it might require a manifold replacement too. with a performance tune, should run about 250 bhp daily. the only thing that worries me about that car is something in the suspension i keep hearing about.

decent kit

the guy I bought it from said its has some type of upgraded fuel management that can be turned on / off with the curse control button. He said he will send me a link to the details and he also gave me a obdII -> usb reader with some audi software.

I'm uploading pictures right now.

sounds like that things already been "chipped" with giac software. if so, that's awesome.

Re: project: AWD turbo Audi A4 (picture update )

apr runs off the cruise control.

Step 1: Press and hold the "set" button on your cruise control. After approximately five seconds, the "check engine" light on your dash will begin to blink once per second. This will tell you that you are activating program one. This blinking sequence will continue for approximately five seconds.

After this five second interval, the "check engine" light will begin blinking twice per second. This will indicate that you have activated the second program. This process is continued to access any remaining programs you may have purchased. (three blinks = program three, four blinks = program four).

Step 2: Once you have activated the desired program, simply release the "set" button. The "check engine" light will go off, and you will be locked in that program until you change it.

It's that simple.
could be a pretty decent find if you are running a tune on it already. that is 200-208 bhp. look at the 1.8T badge, see if it has a little red flag on the "T", all 01's should have it, but it's a reassurance that it is one of the good ones.

------- right. first thing i did was try it on my gti when i got it. some people don't disclose that ---- in fear you might offer less.

yea its got a red flag on the T, I think it might have a blown head gasket the oil looks fine, but the coolant looks brown.

what is a good Audi forum to start debugging the problems?

1. I know it needs valve cover seals because of the coils keeps popping out.
2. a turbo
3. ..

compression test that bitch and report back. i've got my ideas, but i don't wanna speculate.

search on vwvortex in the 1.8t section. search, don't ask. the reason that i say that is that the technical knowlege in that forum is less than honda tech. is that an awm engine code?

Re: project: AWD turbo Audi A4 (picture update )

are you doing the work yourself? if so, then you will save a lot of money.

try fourtitude.something. just go to www.vwvortex.com the audi forums are the fourtitude forums. also be sure to look at the "1.8t tech" forum. there is a lot of info to be had there, on top of a buncha douchebags.

. Release locking pins for engine cover by turning 90 degrees. Remove the cover completely.

2. Warm up engine until it is a minimum of 30 degrees Celsius (60 degrees F) and switch ignition off.

3. Disconnect 4 pin harness connectors from all ignition coils and
remove ignition coils (Place them in a way that you know which ones are for each cylinder). If you have an AWD engine code unbolt the coils from the head and remove the vacuum reservoir (canister).. If you have an AWW or AWP engine code just remove the coils.

4. Use compressed air to clear area around spark plugs. Remove all spark plugs and lay aside in an order that you remember which one goes to each cylinder.

5. Remove fuse #32 for voltage supply to injectors (in car)

6. Fit compression tester into spark plug hole.

7. Have a helper - Depress clutch pedal fully, Put transmission in either park or neutral, Depress the accelerator pedal to floor, Crank engine over with starter motor. Crank a minimum of 4 to 5 revolutions.

8. Record readings from each cylinder in gauge and repeat procedure for each cylinder.

9. Compare readings to these specifications. New Cylinders (145-203 psi) Wear limit (102 psi) Maximum difference between cylinders 44 psi

10. When all cylinders have been checked, reinstall spark plugs and ignition coils, connect harness connectors for coils and reinstall fuse #32. Reinstall fuse panel.

NOTES Cranking engine with ignition system disabled and components disconnected will cause Diagnostic trouble codes (DTC's) to be stored in engine management system memory. You must clear these cod

I junked mine last month, throw a rod at only 180000 kilometers, first thing was water pump, head gasket, and timing, I took the car to the dealer to get this done because I did not have time and want it dont fast. after I got it back lifter noise, ignored it for while thought it was the rod bearings, so I changed them noise continues. 6 months later rod went through the block . I could have find a replacement easy, but I decided to junk it.

make sure the turbo will fit a logitudinal motor... get the part number.. k03-whatever

Re: project: AWD turbo Audi A4 (picture update )

Make sure you do the timing belt, water pump and tensioner. The 1.8T doesn't like anything bigger then a GT28RS without internals. Just find a K-04 and call it a day. If you go "BT" use Unitronics for your tunning.

prepare for limp mode with a boost controller... that software will have you boosting past the effiency of the snail anyways.

if i ever get rid of my k03s, it would be for a t3/t4. they do really well with the 1.8t

Same ---- happened to a good friend of mine. Bent some valves, put a used head on as a replacement and it skipped a tooth(or 4) within a few seconds of start-up and chances are it bent some valves in the new(used)head. :1 He sold the piece of ---- so we don't know exactly what happened, but chances are it needs some new valves....again. :3
