Problems installing XP

STFU Kain, I'm NOT installing Linux.

A buddy of mine got a 300 gig hard drive and needed XP on it, so I slapped the 300 in there and popped in my windows XP disk. I did the whole partition/format thang, it installed then restarted, said "Press any key to boot from CD..." so I pressed a button and it went back to the beginning ??? I rejumpered the hard drive to "master" from "cable select", cleaned the installation CD, reformated and everything and the ---- still aint working. If the CD isn't in the drive, "No Operating System Found" appears... if I pop in the CD and don't press a button by the time it goes to 6 periods.. well, it doesn't quite FREEZE but it won't do anything.... its still responsive, keyboard still working... wtf? but if I do press a button in time, it goes back to the beginning again... so whats the deal? I don't get it.

Re: Problems installing XP

This is the only hard drive in right now.. originally the 30 gig was in as a slave, but I figured it'd be better to have it unplugged.

leave it on cable select and go in the bios and see if it finds it

Yeah, it's just by itself.

Slapped in the old hard drive to see if it would boot, sure does.

Deleted all the old partitions on the drive and then started the format and install?

Correct me if Im not reading this right...

1) You took your XP cd, put it into the cd-rom drive, rebooted and bios loaded up and everythings normal and it says "press key to load from CD..."

2) You Hit "(whatever)" key and it brought you up to a blue screen letting you ready Microsofts license agreement and all that bs. You hit F8, then i think it is choose the partiton, delete the partiton by hitting "L", then you go to the unpartiton drive. then you have a choice of format, or format <quick>

3) You picked a format whatever you did, then the install cd formatted the drive and restarted after 15 seconds or if you hit a key

4) it asks you again to hit a key to boot up from cd and you hit a key

This is where you are right now correct?

Check your Bio's make sure your booting to the right HD, make sure that it is detecting the new hard drive, Other than that i would need more info to help you. Also is it a legal copy of xp?
