Problems installing XP
STFU Kain, I'm NOT installing Linux.
A buddy of mine got a 300 gig hard drive and needed XP on it, so I slapped the 300 in there and popped in my windows XP disk. I did the whole partition/format thang, it installed then restarted, said "Press any key to boot from CD..." so I pressed a button and it went back to the beginning ??? I rejumpered the hard drive to "master" from "cable select", cleaned the installation CD, reformated and everything and the ---- still aint working. If the CD isn't in the drive, "No Operating System Found" appears... if I pop in the CD and don't press a button by the time it goes to 6 periods.. well, it doesn't quite FREEZE but it won't do anything.... its still responsive, keyboard still working... wtf? but if I do press a button in time, it goes back to the beginning again... so whats the deal? I don't get it. |
Re: Problems installing XP
are your other hdds plugged in at the same time?
|
Re: Problems installing XP
This is the only hard drive in right now.. originally the 30 gig was in as a slave, but I figured it'd be better to have it unplugged.

Re: Problems installing XP
leave it on cable select and go in the bios and see if it finds it

And now it's not even loading the installer... hmm |
Re: Problems installing XP
try running the hdd on the ide cable alone
cable select as always |
Re: Problems installing XP
Yeah, it's just by itself.
Slapped in the old hard drive to see if it would boot, sure does. |
Re: Problems installing XP
Deleted all the old partitions on the drive and then started the format and install?
|

Re: Problems installing XP
Correct me if Im not reading this right...
1) You took your XP cd, put it into the cd-rom drive, rebooted and bios loaded up and everythings normal and it says "press key to load from CD..." 2) You Hit "(whatever)" key and it brought you up to a blue screen letting you ready Microsofts license agreement and all that bs. You hit F8, then i think it is choose the partiton, delete the partiton by hitting "L", then you go to the unpartiton drive. then you have a choice of format, or format <quick> 3) You picked a format whatever you did, then the install cd formatted the drive and restarted after 15 seconds or if you hit a key 4) it asks you again to hit a key to boot up from cd and you hit a key This is where you are right now correct? Check your Bio's make sure your booting to the right HD, make sure that it is detecting the new hard drive, Other than that i would need more info to help you. Also is it a legal copy of xp? |
Re: Problems installing XP
Yes, thats where I was, and BIOS recognized the hard drive, and it was the only hard drive connected (so it wouldn't get confused). I said screw it and made it a slave.
and yes it is a legal copy of XP. |
Re: Problems installing XP
:o mb probably cant boot off it to big of a drive. Or you just got a setting wrong.Remeber the ribbon has 2 connectors.....
The hard drive has to go on the grey one to be the master. Not the blue one...... |

The hard drive has to go on the grey one to be the master. Not the blue one...... set it to Master, put the cable in the Primary IDE connector. Set the bios to boot from 1st the CD, then 2nd the HDD, then put the cd in and restart. Delete ALL partitions and re-partition it, format Quick for NTFS and install this ish. make sure the CD drive is set to Master and have it on the Secondary IDE connector as well. in the BIOS set all IDE connectors to AUTO. btw, what mobo/cpu is this thing, 30gig, sounds like an old p4 or AthlonXP. |
Re: Problems installing XP
^ lol, I already did all of the beforehand and it didn't work. It's a celeron. And BTW, I was thinking maybe the BIOS wouldn't recognize the size of the hard drive, but sure enough it did. And it works fine now.

Re: Problems installing XP
so you got it working?
|
Re: Problems installing XP
Eh, he wanted Win XP installed on the 300 gig, and the 30 gig to be the secondary because the original was "slow"... well I ran anti-virus, anti-spyware anti-everything and got it running well again... kid had like 200 things startup when windows loaded, no wonder it was so slow... I told him to get more ram too, he only has 256, I told him to upgrade to 512 (thats all the board can support anyways)

heck, he should have bought a gf 6150 board w/ an A64-3200 wouldhave made a MUCH larger difference. i still dont see how the 300gb wouldnt work though, |
Re: Problems installing XP
No, not to make his PC faster. He does a lot of photography work and needs extra space. He said his comp was running slower than ever and wanted a fresh start as well...
Yeah I don't see how it wouldn't work either. I think my disk is fubar'd |

Re: Problems installing XP
Well, it's a legit burned CD lol. We used them at school all the time, they worked perfectly. I think the disc has one too many scratches on it now.
