pc gamers, come inside, suggestions wanted...

ok, so here's the deal. i havent gamed on hardly anthing in a very long time. the last two games i played religously was original Rainbow Six and original Doom. I am looking for some suggestions on whats good thats out now that would be comparible in "style" to the previously mentioned games.

I went to the store today to pickup a sweet deal on a 22" flat panel LCD monitor and while there, i took a walk over to the game section and saw that there are MANY titles out now. and without having something there to see what the impressions were of each game i didnt really want to spend the money on a game that was a complete pile of ----.

anyone got any thoughts?

COD 4
and
if your comp can handle it then "crysis".

Re: pc gamers, come inside, suggestions wanted...

well, i have....

Pentium Dual Core E4500 (2.2ghz, 2mb l2 Cache, 800mhz FSB)
2gb of Corsair DDR2 XMS2 ram (2x1gb)
e-GeForce 7300 GS 256MB Video Card
22" Acer AL2216W

like i said, its been awhile since i have done any gaming on the pc, so i am not quite sure how good the vid card is and how well it will work with a lot of the newer games out.

Skifree :D

Re: pc gamers, come inside, suggestions wanted...

hardware doesnt exsist at this moment to fully run crysis. 3 8800gtx's in 3way sli still cant keep up with all the eye candy on so yeah your 7300gs doesnt stand a chance http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3183

you can try UT3 though, download the demo and try it out. it looks great and doesnt require a rediculous computer.

HMTguy 02-09-2008 11:32 PM

Re: pc gamers, come inside, suggestions wanted...

That's dumb, why would they make a game that nobody can run at full detail?

jo_gobel 02-09-2008 11:34 PM

Re: pc gamers, come inside, suggestions wanted...

UT3 looks to much like Halo. I wasnt a fan of that.

as for Crysis, i was looking at that and it seemed somewhat entertaining, but i saw the pc specs as...

Minimum Processor Required Pentium 2.4GHz (Intel Pentium 3.2GHz for Windows Vista)
Minimum RAM Required 1GB (1.5GB for Windows Vista)
Minimum Hard Drive Space 12GB
Peripheral Devices Required DVD-ROM Drive, Sound Card, 3D Video Card with 256MB Video Memory, SVGA Display
Supported Video Card Chipsets NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT or Better; ATi Radeon 9800 Pro (Radeon X800 Pro for Vista) or Better

so i can assume that my pc could play it, but i would have to lower the settings on the game to play?

Re: pc gamers, come inside, suggestions wanted...

you can play it but not with the best settings.

team fortress 2 is fun

portal is fun

everything in the orange box is fun

they are trying to play it with all the highest settings on a 30 inch monitor with 2560x1600 resolution. there is hardware that can play it on full settings on a normal sized monitor and resolution, say 1600x1200

Jcushing 02-09-2008 11:54 PM

Re: pc gamers, come inside, suggestions wanted...

if you meet the minumum specs for the game you should be able to play it but it will have to be at low resolutions and low quality. the resolutions they tested in the link i posted was 1900x1200 wich is the resolution of a 24" LCD not a 30.

what hardware is there that can play crysis at its highest setting at 1680x1200? the link i posted was only running 1900x1200 and with 3 of the biggest cards out today running in 3way sli it was still only playable at the second highest quality.

HMTguy 02-09-2008 11:55 PM

Re: pc gamers, come inside, suggestions wanted...

1280x800 is good enough for me!

resolution isn't the only quality setting though

the anti aliasing is what kills crysis

it eats up over a gig of ram when i run it on high graphics mode... w/o anti aliasing

BattleField2. I'm a huge fan of it. It's been out for a few years now and i would still be playing it if my gaming computer's hard drives didn't fail :(

You can pick it up now with all the expansions for like $20.

Hell of a game for 20bucks

Here's a video of some close courters combat with a good 'ol pump shotgun
http://youtube.com/watch?v=X9nrBkPuxmE

You can also chose other maps that you can do anything from driving a dune buggy to flying a jet with up to 32players on each team, all real people...no AI bots.
The game is a FPS but this video is recorded in 3rd person view

I have the orange box and the only game I really enjoyed was Portal. Something about TF2 just doesn't seem right.

Maybe I just haven't played it enough to enjoy it or I'm too used to Halo 3 and CoD4. TF2 is pretty and I like the graphics style but the gameplay just doesn't turn me on.

geez if were goin old school UT99 is tha ----. i still play it to this day :S

i havent found any of the newer shooters to be worth anything more than a demo download, just seems like the genre is getting old but some of my friends have said bioshock was good.

jo_gobel 02-10-2008 12:00 PM

Re: pc gamers, come inside, suggestions wanted...

ok, so of the suggestions given so far, the ones i am digging are...

Crysis
Call Of Duty 4
Gears Of War (seems ok for the 1 player option)
Half Life 2
Portal

the ones that I am not digging is....

UT99 (or any Unreal Tourny)
Battlefield2
Team Fortress 2

also, has anyone played Rainbow Six Las Vegas? I think that looked pretty damn sweet.

command and conquer generals zero hour is the greatest pc game of all time. it's been out for like 5 years, and it's still the game me and the guys prefer to LAN. Also all of the battlefield games are good, preferrably BF2.

if your looking to play online versus others, id go witih counters strike. its pretty addicting. i used to play it a fewq years back a tons and im starting to play it again. only bad thing is that 60% of the community online cheats. but i you can deal with that its pretty damn fun

Re: pc gamers, come inside, suggestions wanted...

cod4 was sold out everywhere i went and i couldnt find gears of war either.

as for crysis, i held off on buying that for now along with the orange box.

i picked up a couple classics that i played back in the day along with Rainbow Six Vegas.

i deffinately want to pick up a game that i can play online with others and CS did kind of stand out a little to me.
