however, I'd rather pay 200-1000 (depends on parts used) for a 720-1080p resolution, with decent contrast (of course won't be dlp level), and bulbs that can be replaced for $10-50. I'll deal with slightly lower contrast ratio for 1000+ in savings and bulbs that won't cost $150-300 to replace.

You can get extremely good quality on DIY projectors, just depends on the builder and quality of parts used (same goes here)

Good point.

Also the 20,000 hours is supposed to be its "half-life" which it'll still work past that, but the color and lumens will continue to decrease. As one more bonus, you can use it to grow tomatoes during the long, cold winters.

/sigh unfortunately... the lcd i have and was planning to use is way too big. 20"
