B16Drag, your VC looks really good. What did you use?
B16Drag, your VC looks really good. What did you use?
1) Use a airplane paint stripper to get the old paint off. With help of Q-tips, get the hard to reach spots, and make sure all of the old paint is off--do it several time if need be. Make sure you use several layers of latex gloves and have some running water. The paint stripper is a major skin irritant. Definately do not get it in your eyes!
2) Use simple green or some kind of detergent (even dishwashing soap is fine) to cut out the grease, make sure you wash it afterwards.
3) Sand down the VC with some sand paper to roughen up the surfaces--I think I used 400 and then 600--I used the wet or dry type so I could just wet sand it..
4) Wash the VC clean and dry it up with towels, hair dryer, or leave it out in the sun. Get it VERY dry, and watch out for stupid lints!
5) Cover things up. Use vasoline to cover up the letters (KEY part... be very careful where the damn vasoline goes. You only want it on the top surface of the lettering... Q-tips come in handing) Also use some scotch tape to cover up certain holes like the spark plug holes etc... It would be a pain to try to get paint out of areas where it doesnt belong. Use an exacto knife to make the your life easier when taping things up.
6) Set up somehere where there will not be too much dust or wind. Do it either in your garage or outside when its not windy. I ended up sitting it up on a stool outside when it wasnt winding and went at it.
7) Shake the damn rattle can good. ~2 mins
The layers with the wrinkle finish paint needs to be thicker than regular paint but not too thick because it will run and cause you to have HUGE wrinkles. Spray it on in a back and forth motion giving it a nice layer. If you dont give it a thick layer, the wrinkles wont come out. One more tip is to watch your stupid finger on the can. Do not let it get in the way of the spray otherwise you'll get drops. Wait about 5-10 mins and then give another layer. I gave my VC about 4 or so good layers.
9) After spraying, let it sit for several hours (3-4hrs). If no wrinkle is happening give it another thick layer (thicker than before since your previous coats didnt wrinkle).
10) Let it sit over night or until dry.
11) Use an exacto knife and slowly take off the vasoline on top of the lettering and the taped up holes.
Good luck peeps... I know there are other write-ups, but I'm feeling bored and generous! hah
