Re: Nightmare tuning client

know exactly how you feel. i had to turn a guy away yesterday because he still had an fmu and 310cc on a gsr after telling him the week before to have fmu off, 440cc or larger inj in, and no cel. he had 3 cel: o2 (obvious work around), vtp (easily work around/fix), and cylinder pos. now i could have spent a lot of time and effort, but unless they are willing to pay for the extra time and understand it's seperate from the tuning. i gave him all the info for the fixes for free (hopefully he'll do it), seemed like a very nice kid.

what pisses me off is when someone comes in w/ an obvious hack job and expects the tuning to fix all the issues and gets upset when it doesn't or something acts up because of the hack job setup after tuning and feels it's the tuners fault. i explain before, during, and after all the issues and what to expect and not feel the least guilty in collecting their $$ if i've spent a sh#t load of time after tuning...most of the time i work the price a little lower for them, but i shouldn't.

don't feel bad in the least and try and explain it to him one final time. if it doesn't work, then let him know you've done all you can for him and recommend someone else or let him know what you'll charge to get it all fixed.

I've been dealing with a toolbag like this in my town as well. He wanted me to tune his gsr equipped hatch. He brought me a car that sputters at 4000, that is throwing 3 codes, that base timing wasn't set, that wasn't lashed for the new cams he put in the night before, that lost a lash adjusting lock-nut. I was feeling good about this car because it was a chance to show this small town what I could do. That, I could transform the worst running piece of crap into a clean screamer. I worked 3 days on that car (not full days, maybe 8 hours total including tuning). After busting my butt at work, I had this piece sitting in my garage. I eliminated the codes, set timing, checked wiring schematics, installed his wideband, set lash, replaced missing lock-nut, and tuned the thing, and because he was a friend, I charged him $220.00...

Never got a cent.

I'm so tempted to release his name to the public for another call-a-thon, but I'm not exactly "important" on HMT. There's more to the story, but the moral is, boys and girls, don't hand the keys over before you receive the payment...

I'm sure your situation will work out better for you, JD.

Where the hell are all you tuners at? I don't need any tuning done just a little hand holding till' I get off the ground, I'm a pretty quick learner.

I know what you guys mean though, I fix cars mechanically and I tell people don't refer me to known dead beats, besides I always ask for something upfront.

Apparently, the dude no longer has a vehicle and drives mommy and daddy's taurus, has stolen thousands from his parents, stolen/spent more of his parents money, and they are going to pay off his debt. I say kick him out on the street!
