new cheap comp setup

i went and bought the cheapest "good" stuff i could at frys

gigabyte s-series p35-ds3r motherboar (fsb1333, 1200dr2 etc...) $129.99
intel core 2 duo (64x, dual 2.3gig cores, 1333mhz fsb) $179.99
4gig patriot pc6400 800mhz 2x2gb ddr2 ram $99.00
geforce 8500GT 512mb ddr2 pci-e SLI reay $159.99
500w extreme power atx power supply (can't get power supply around $100 so xbox is way better) $49.99

i already have drives, but i'm going to pick up one sata raptor drive later $179.99

$558

nothing is "top of the line" but its all close and will make a great cheap system.

Not bad, doing it yourself is definitely the way to go.

Re: new cheap comp setup

i got that same ram on sale @ newegg for like $75 two weeks ago after a rebate. but its great to see descent 4g ram hitting below $100 now! used the same card too. they're good for the money. plus, if you get lazy you could probably ebay a used one to SLI for $15-25 within the next 6 months. that'd be tits :D i know cause it'd be abit faster than the 8600 i have downstairs, and it'll do anything shy of crysis.
ebay yourself a pair of raptor's and raid-0 em. multi-cpu/core's and striping arrays (RAID-1,3-6) change lives lol!

sounds like a slick puss to me :y

what core duo did you go with?

Re: new cheap comp setup

the only problem is my board only has one pci-e slot

i thought about getting a dual pci-e board, but the only ones they had where 1 16x and 1 8x

so you like the 8500gt card? seems like it'll work

none of the prices i posted at with rebates so there is no teasing

i got the 2.3ghz 1333fsb chip

i thought about getting 3.0 one but it was about $150 more.

two 2.3gig cores should be enough

Yeah I meant more of what model it is, I'm guessing the 6550. I was going to go with the 6420 since it's got an extra multiplier but is the same chip otherwise, so would overclock a bit faster...but the 6550 is $35 cheaper on newegg so still a good buy.

I'm want to piece together a budget computer soon.
